I finished up the first two blocks of my new Ruffled Feathers quilt this evening. There is going to be a lot more color in this quilt than I thought there would be.
I got two shipments of fabric in the mail today, three pieces of which I was waiting for to get started on this quilt. After work I cut the new fabrics and then shuffled the different pieces, whites with whites and colors with colors, so that I can just grab fabrics off the top of the stack and fly.

I just love the precise points on the paper pieced geese. I’m really glad I took the time to make the templates.
I’m also really liking how the different white fabrics play with each other. I think it really ads interest, depth, and dimension to this quilt.
These blocks are huge so this quilt should go fast. I’m planning on 20 blocks for a throw size quilt.

I really like the effect of swirling movement and the sort of ‘opal’ feel you get from the photos. It’s only when I squinted at the picture that the dark/light positive and negative space of the geese really gained contrast for me. Having said that, though, I think once you have more blocks arranged, the pattern will emerge. Love it!

That’s a really interesting way to describe it. I love the way those big prints play together when you cut them into smaller pieces…. so much movement and drama. And you’re right, it looks different as I get more blocks done. But I’m really liking it, even though it feels and looks different than I thought it would.

I think Kate captured the essence of this quilt when she said “swirling movement and the sort of opal feel”! Even though I hardly ever use any sort of pastel fabrics in my quilts, I really like the coloration of this combination of patterns and colors. I didn’t really care for the heraldic fabric when I first saw it, but I can see now how it was an inspiration!! Good work! Yet again!

Oh no! I love that heraldic fabric! I have several large pieces for backings: this grey, a blue for my blue spots hexagon quilt, and a bright spring green that I might be using soon! I just LOVE that fabric!!! I’m also not a lover of pastels, and I’m surprised that this doesn’t feel very pastel to me at all because I thought it would.

If the finished block is 16×16 then the corner blocks would finish to 2″, the rectangular blocks to 6″. In viewing your block it does not look as if the rectangular blocks are 3x the size of the corner squares. Have I made a miscalculation?

Your calculations are off. I can’t give you the exact measurements because it’s not my pattern to give away. But the corner blocks are about 2/3 the size of the rectangles.

I can’t give you the exact sizes because I’d be giving away the pattern. The block is 16 inches square. it’s big and once you get the geese done, the block goes together really fast.

I wonder if you might not want to add more gray/neutral prints in the rectangles in the borders to have a little less color. I like it as is but thought too that it wouldn’t be this colorful. The other thought though is as you make more blocks and get them up on the design wall it may become more neutral as a whole. We are just too close to the individual blocks.

I think there is more gray to come. I’m using Brandon’s Bali Brocade and it’s almost half gray… but only black is showing up so far. There is also a fair amount of grey in Philip’s Shaggy. So I think you’re right that more gray will be showing up. It is a completely different look when you get more blocks up on the wall.

Thanks! I don’t know if you read this, but I made my own paper piecing template for the geese. That’s how I get those nice points! I could never get that with other methods of making geese!
