New KFC Fabrics Delivered Today!

My big news for the day is that my package of new Kaffe Fassett Collective fabrics that I ordered from Glorious Color came via Fed Ex this morning. It was a pretty big package!

Here’s what was in there: 23 half-yard cuts, 2 one-yard cuts, one two-yard cut, and a 2 1/2 yard piece of wide backing.

Oddly enough, the pieces I’m most excited about are the two white pieces and the black and white sharks teeth.

The wide backing will be used for the blue KFC sixteen patch quilt that I finished recently. It will be the first time I’ve ever used a wide backing.

This blue millefiori is really gorgeous! The design is a little big bigger than on the regular quilting fabric and the colors seem just a little more vibrant. The wide backing also has a more silky texture.

That’s the regular fabric on top and the wide back on the bottom. GAH! It’s so gorgeous!

And, of course, I had to take a good look at all of it! There’s a quilt in these pinks and reds! That feathers is so amazing!

And these greens… seriously!!! No wonder this is my favorite color!

And this white moss flower below is so gorgeous! I see a lot of this in my future!

I took a couple days off work this week to recover from our radio fundraising drive. On Tuesday we got up early and hit the road for the coast. Low tide was at about 8:30. I had hoped to be on the road at 7 am, but it was 7:30 by the time we pulled away from home.

We were on the beach all by ourselves at 9 am. We headed north from Arcadia Beach onto Cannon Beach. We walked about a mile onto Cannon Beach.

If you look at that big rock immediately behind these boys, you might see a little bump on the top.

It took me a little time to figure out what it was, and boy, was I surprised!

A bald eagle!!!! And it was huge! It’s not terribly common for me to see eagles at the beach!

Then we turned around and headed back toward the south and back onto Arcadia Beach — the beach we usually visit on our day trips.

It’s about 1.5 miles from the beach access to the southern point. When we got to the end, I turned around and looked back north from where we had just come and saw something on the beach. At first I thought it was a really big dog. And then I realized it was a deer!

He was on the beach were we had just walked not more than five minutes before.

And our wildlife excitement wasn’t over. As I headed back north I noticed something in the surf. At first I thought it was a rock, but it was bobbing in the water and moving north. . . a sea lion! It’s not uncommon to see sea lions on the Oregon coast, but I’m pretty sure I’ve never seen any on this beach.

I walked over six miles on the beach. I’m guessing the dogs must have run at least 15 miles!

Before I headed home I stopped in at a little quilt store in Cannon Beach that I really like. They have a really nice selection of fabrics and the staff is really friendly. I bought a few black and white fabrics there!

I’m happy to report that my black and white kick is continuing! Here’s an order I got in the mail this week from Quilt Expressions in Boise.

I still have two more packages of black and white fabrics that are on their way to me. It’s becoming a ridiculous amount of black and white fabric.

I’m slowly completing the final blocks for my Ice Storm quilt. I have 8 blocks in progress, with an additional 8 blocks that haven’t been started yet. Then I can get it up on the design wall.

I have sewn together one row of my scrappy KFC trip quilt. It’s a little slower process since the seams aren’t pressed in a way that makes them nest easily. So I have to repress some of the seams, and carefully match other seams that just won’t nest.

Luckily , there are only seven rows so it shouldn’t take too long. I’d like to finish the Ice Storm blocks this weekend and make some good headway on assembling the scrappy trip quilt.

    1. I’m very excited about using that wide backing! It will be fun to have that gorgeous print uninterrupted across the back of the quilt. Plus, it’s really luscious fabric. It will make a very comfy quilt!

  2. With your black and white prints, do you find it bothers you if some are stark white and others are cream colored, or you don’t worry about it?

    1. I’ve looked at a lot of quilts made with black and white fabrics lately. It’s really common to see the different tones combined. Even my Ice Storm quilt that I’m finishing up now has stark whites and off whites. Some people even use beiges. I’m not as happy with the beiges, but I actually like the variation you get with the whites and off whites… as long as they’re not too beige.

      you could certainly do it either way and get different effects.

    1. So nice to hear from you. This really is a beautiful part of the country. The Oregon coast is really amazing.

      I have so many ideas for these black and white fabrics. I can’t wait to get started but I have four quilts in active progress right now! I need to get at least a couple of those tops done before I start another one!

    1. I just LOVE touching these fabrics! I love opening up a new package, unfolding the fabrics and looking at each one and touching it, and then folding it into the size that I use for my stash. It makes my brain tingle!!!

  6. Oh, my! First, the fabric haul is so fun :), bright colors are my favorite but you got some awesome black & white prints! Especially the black kitties, gotta get me some :)! You are so lucky to live near such a beautiful coast , enjoy!

    1. I’ve bought some really fun black and white fabrics. Some with cats. Some with Dogs. Llamas, mountains, all kinds of fun stuff! It will be really fun to see them in quilts!

      and I agree that I’m very lucky to live so close to the coast. It’s about 80 miles from my front door to my favorite beach. I really should go more often. I usually get over there four or five times a year.

  7. I’m anxious to see your scrappy Many Trips and especially Ice Storm! Something about Ice Storm has captured my attention and I would really like to make something similar. I’ve already started pulling fabrics. Those little very pale colors intrigue me, but right now I’m continuing work on my version of Dresden Blooms (MSQC).

    1. Thanks! I’m really liking that Ice Storm quilt too. In person, the colors are a little more apparent, but they are very light and subtle. It’s such a different quilt for me to make. I’ve really enjoyed making it. In fact, i’ve really enjoyed all of the quilts I’ve been making from 2.5 inch strips recently. I have several more planned with all those black and whites… combined with KFC fabrics and with batiks.

    What a great day for wildlife too.

    Here on the BC coast fabric is more expensive, but wildlife is more plentiful, There are always trade offs.

  9. I look forward to your post each day. My daughter is sewing a kafe fabric quilt for my king size bed. I am making a scrappy quilt from kafe fabrics. Just made 14 pillow covers all from kafe, phillip and Brandon fabrics

    1. Another Kaffe fan!!! My friend and i laugh that all we do is make scrap quilts! Where are all these scraps coming from??? But I love a good scrap quilt! I’ve made a lot of them!

  11. This was a great post, I am looking forward to seeing what you do with the wonderful assortment of fabrics that just arrived !
    The adventure photo’s are really fun to see of the Oregon coast, I live in Maine, not far from the Ocean.

    1. the Oregon coast is really beautiful. I moved to Portland 11 years ago from Salt Lake City, I really love being so close to the ocean. It’s really easy to get in the car and just go for a walk on the beach and then come home.

  13. Love your whole post! My goal is to limit fabric purchases this year (haha), but some of those new Kaffe fabrics are just too hard to pass up now that I see them. I had never used wide KF backing so was interesting to see the difference in the prints from regular yardage. And oh all those black & white prints. Can’t wait to see what you do with them. Meantime I am waiting to see the blue and white 16 patch. Did I miss seeing the top all pieced? Then there are dogs and the beach…my other loves! Hoping to get there in a week. You are just so inspiring!

  14. So much eye candy! I just finished reading Kaffes Country Gardens book and it was inspiring to say the least. So many neat wildlife sitings too. We are starting to see bald eagles in SE Michigan, but the place we really enjoyed them was in southern Minnesota when we lived there for a few years. Dozens at a time!

    1. We have a good number of balk eagles here, but it’s not common to see them perched on a big rock at the beach! I used to see them circling in the sky from my office window. I actually saw one fly over my yard about a year ago when I was out playing with the dogs. That was so surprising! And it was low! So cool! They are really amazing to see.
