Another UFO Back on the Design Wall

I’ve been thinking 2023 might be the year of the unfinished project. I got such a sense of satisfaction from finishing my jewel frames quilt top in December that I’m itching to dig into another one.

So this evening I pulled out my sunburst quarter log cabin blocks and tried a different arrangement.

When I first put these blocks up on the design wall I really liked this layout.

And then I looked at my photos of the original layout and I decided that was the better look.

Here’s a closer view that really shows the blocks.

I think it definitely looks better without all those sunburst clumped up together. And this photo above shows the blocks the most like they are in person.

Here’s a view of more blocks.

This will be for my brother and his wife for their queen size bed. I’m pretty sure I am really close to having all the blocks done. I may only have one or two left to make. Later this week I’ll get this all back up on the design wall, make sure I have all the blocks I need, cut the setting triangles, then start sewing this baby together.

And, of course, while I’m thinking about finishing up some UFOs, I’m also thinking about new things to make.

I’ve been thinking about something blue…

Maybe something simple with 8 inch squares sashed in this gorgeous cobalt blue sharks tooth fabric, and set on point. Blue is not my favorite color, but I just love some of these gorgeous blues.

I’ll noodle on this for a while.

I recently purchased some fabric on sale for a backing for my red Fractured quilt. I bought the fabric online so had to make the assumption that it would work with the quilt.

I thought it would read more purple and red, but that teal in it is really strong. It’s not the best match, but it’s going to have to do since I’ve bought it! I think it will be fine once it’s quilted. I’ll bind it with the solid purple.

We have a nice stretch of weather coming up over the next ten days. No rain in the forecast. it will be so nice after the wet stretch we’ve had since the first of the year. But before the good weather arrived, we had a touch of snow on Saturday during Rico’s sheep herding lesson.

When we took our walk this morning we had full sunshine and it was glorious!

I went and played pickleball in a middle school gym this afternoon. It was fun but it was really hard to see the ball and there were so many lines all over he court it was hard to know which ones to pay attention to.

I got a new app on my phone that makes cartoons out of photos of your dogs. So I played around with it a little over the weekend.

Some of them turned out really well.

Some of them … not so good.

Poor Rico looks like his nose has been screwed on!

So I gave it a try with a photo of me…

It’s so funny how the four different versions came out completely different. And I have a rabbit (or some other critter) coming out of the side of my head!

So I gave it a try with another photo…

Hahaha! So funny how the app translates the photo!

I’ll close tonight with this cutie patootie.

  1. I like looking at the final version of your quilt upside down … I made a similar one last year, putting a fussy cut flower in the top corner of the on-point block!
    Yours is dynamic! ❤️

  2. You start my day off right! Color and humor, answer to a puzzle and something new, wrapped up in news about your weather (so different from here in always sunny Gulfport, FL) and your lovely dogs. Happy Monday to you!

  3. Sounds like you’re getting some motivation going again. That’s great to hear. I agree that the new layout looks better. 👌 what a hoot on the photos. Yeah what’s up with the rabbit?? LOL
That app just makes everyone so cute.

    1. Well, I actually don’t have much motivation right now. It’s a little better than it was, but it’s not back with gusto. I’m thinking part of it is that work has been busy. I haven’t quite recovered from the end of year rush yet. So not much relief in sight.

  4. Love the original layout! The layout with all the 4 sunbursts to the center just seem to get congested, my eye stops there. The original layout keeps my eye moving and I can take in all the lovely colors.

It is hard to do a quilt in colors that are not your favorite. The comfort zone thing extends to our least favorite colors. I happen to like blues or a least trend to working in blues, greens, and purples( as evidenced by my scarp pile). I think the 8″ squares with sharks tooth sashing will be cool. I have seen variations on it with the black and white sharks tooth and they are beautiful. You’ll make it fabulous, you always do.

The cartoon app is funny, Now you can make Rico and Bender comic books. 😄

      1. No I didn’t notice that, but there are enough of them in there. I do see blue in your bucket so there is possibility for an additional sprinkling of blue. I do like the Caladium backing for your red quilt. The back is sometimes an opportunity for a bit a surprise. The purple binding will help tie it all together (no pun intended 😊).

  5. I do like the original quilt layout, it looks better, it’s very bright and demanding. It’s strange how the app changed your eyebrow color in the photos and having a rabbit on your head too. I do like the photos of your dogs, it makes them cuter than they already are.

    1. I like the quilt as it’s on my design wall much more when I step into my sewing room. It’s much better in person. I won’t be making any decisions rashly.

How can I stand having dogs that are even cuter than they were???

    1. yeah, that app interprets things in funny ways. I have a friend who used a picture of herself holding one of her dogs. She had a mask on and the app made it look like she had meth head acne!!! it was so funny.

  6. Rico and Bender look like lovable Disney characters with that cartoon app. Could be a fun way to while away a rainy day. FYI.. I too like your original quilt layout of the sunburst, log cabin design. Another great quilt in the making!

  7. I would like to comment on the new quilt you’re planning. The blue one. I feel that that background needs a much brighter color like an orange or red. Blue is my favorite color and I love all those fabrics but I think that background needs some thing brighter more. Dynamic.

    1. I make a lot of bright colored quilts, but for this one I really want to emphasize blues that have a lot of white or lighter tones in them. there will be small pops of color here and there, but I’m looking for something with a specific feel for this one. I’ve been thinking about a blue quilt with these fabrics for some time now.

It’s almost difficult for me to tone down the colors and stick with something that’s more monochromatic. It will be fun!

  8. I love the original sunburst layout also. Sometimes, the first decision is the right one!

I love the caladiums, but not so much for your fractured red quilt. There are so many great Kaffe fabric sales going on now that I would look for something else that really sings and save the caladiums for another project (of which I am sure will be many!) I like to make my quilt backs something unexpected and a nice surprise!

    1. You’re a bad influence. I’m inclined to use it because I already have at least 20 large pieces of fabric (good for backings) in my stash. I don’t need to feed that beast any more!

  9. Hi Ann, Your Bender just makes me laugh. He seems to have a funny/silly personality.
Just wanted to say that I really liked the FIRST picture placement of the log cabin squares. (just my opinion). Very pretty. I also love your blues idea, cuz I love blue! The sharktooth design is great.
    Stay dry!

    1. Bender is, literally, the happiest dog I’ve ever known. Absolutely nothing phases him. And he’s a really good poser!

I like the first arrangement of the blocks too. And it looks mjuch better in person. I’ll play with it a little more before I make any decisions.

  10. I LOVE your sun burst log cabin squares – and your guys look like disney characters. thanks for sharing. you never answered me – do you sell your quilts or bags?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I do sell my bags, when I have them available.

I’ve only sold a couple quilts. One was purchased by a friend for another friend. The other one was actually a commission. It convinced me that I am not interesting in doing commissions.

it’s hard for me to sell quilts because I have to pay someone to quilt them, and that makes them really expensive. Plus people always want queen size and I just don’t like making quilts that big.

  11. If you did the layout in your first photo, I think it would look better as a straight set instead of on point. I do like your original layout for a more lively quilt design.
The cartoon photos gave me a good laugh.
The backing fabric isn’t a total match but still has the same major color tone feeling. I would definitely use it if this combo were mine. The purple binding will look good on both sides.

    1. I’ll probably end up going back to the original layout, but I will try your suggestion first. I was looking at this on my design wall again today and it really does look better in person. Funny how some quilts are just hard to get a good photo of.

thanks for your comments on the backing. I’m inclined to use it. I sort of like that it’s not completely matchy-matchy. In my mind it will work.

      Thanks Wanda1

  12. So much to comment on – 1st I thoroughly enjoy reading your blog. I love how your 1st layout has all the flowers coming together, but I get and agree that the original layout is much better. Your delightful dogs are all set to be featured in a Disney film with that app!

    1. thanks for your comment about that backing fabric. I have a friend who doesn’t like it and I’ve been defending it for a few days. I’m pretty sure I’ll use it. It’s growing on me!
