Just Had to See

It started raining this morning. When I got up it was 55 degrees in my house. I looked at the weather forecast and it wasn’t supposed to get about about 52 degrees today. So I turned my furnace on. We would be getting no warm breezes from the sliding glass door today.

It looks like we got nearly 1/2 inch of rain. It definitely feels like we’ve had a change of seasons. My lawn will go from brown to green in a few days.

I have a friend who is having surgery later this week and I told her that I was going to make her and her husband a big pot of chicken soup. So I got all my shopping for that done today. A quick trip to Costco after work, then a trip to the grocery store after our short evening walk.

When I got home I decided to dig in and pair up the orange/pink/purple strips for my next quilt. I just had to see how they look together.

I had cut two strips from each of 38 different fabrics. I decided to just start with one of each of those 38 fabrics. I pared all the strips into sets of two, mixing colors, pattern and value.

Then I sewed all 19 of the strip sets into pairs, pressed them, cut them in half and have them all ready to sew together tomorrow.

This is all the pairs on my ironing board all ready for the second seam.

I took pictures of almost all of the sets as I pressed and cut. I missed a few. I figured posting photos here would be a good way to get a feeling for how these blocks and fabric combos will look together.

I see one block in there that I really dislike. I’ll wait until I see the blocks done and arranged on my design wall. But if I was editing now, I’d pull it. Can you guess which one it is?

I think I’ll stay away from adding more darks and purples and stick with more orange and pink combos for the additional 16 blocks I’ll need for this quilt top.

I like the way these are looking. But I wanted to wait to pair up the remaining strips until I know how I like this mix of fabrics.

Rico’s sheep herding lesson tomorrow has been canceled, but we do have a lesson with a different trainer on Sunday afternoon. So tomorrow I’m going to get up and have a good breakfast, assess the weather and see what time might work best for a doggie walk, and then I’m going to make that big pot of soup. I’ll deliver it to my friend on Sunday.

With all the rain we had today it was nice to feel the security of a new roof and rebuilt chimney.

  1. Hi from south of France Anne, here it’s still over 70 degrees. How do you do to have so many activities every day??? Do you sleep a little? I am impressed.
An other beautiful quilt in progress! I think the disliking block is the twelfth, too much rose, same colors.
I hope I can do 10% of your activités today.
Thanks so much for sharing, I like To read your post. Have a nice week-end.

    1. I think our 70 degree days will now wait until the spring. We’ll have many months of rain before then. But it will be a very green and gorgeous spring when it finally arrives!

I do sleep, but probably not enough!

The 12th block doesn’t bother me too much. I dislike more a block that is too bold and screams louder than any other block in the quilt.

I’ll wait and see how it all looks once the blocks are done and up on my design wall.

  2. I agree with Maryse – #12.

Wishing you a nice weekend. I’m off to Berea, Ohio, over an hour away, to play for six YSU students who will sing in the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) state auditions today. I love these college students, but I’d rather be sewing. Then tomorrow 27 voice students will sing in the fall voice studio recital. My weekend will be all music, all the time.

  3. Good morning from the UP of Michigan!! We have had quite a bit of rain over the last couple of weeks! And a two day rain & snow & ice storm which cut our color season short!! I cannot see which combination you want to eliminate! I love them all and each one will have its place I think!! Have a happy day!!!

    1. I’ll wait to see how it looks with the finished block in with the rest of the blocks on the design wall. I might change my feelings about it.

I noticed my largest maple tree, that isn’t quite into its full red glory, lost a lot of leaves with our rain yesterday.

  4. I agree with Maryse, for the same reasons. But you have made some stunning pairings—hard to say that even one is a real loser. This will be one gorgeous quilt when assembled. And—like everyone else who commented—I don’t know how you have the energy to be so productive. Keep sewing, walking, blogging . . . I love reading your posts and looking at the fabric eye candy.

    1. the fabrics in that 12th one are very similar, but that’s not the one that’s bothering me. I’ll wait until I see it done and on the design wall with the other blocks but I feel like it will scream in the finished quilt.

I occasionally get on really productive jags where I just want to make and make and make. I try to take advantage of those jags when they arrive because they can disappear quickly!

  5. Are you eliminating a color combo that is too strong or a pair that is too similar? I would choose the pair too similar as the block would lose its definition. But that pair you eliminate becomes an opportunity for a new Frankenbags! Correct?

    1. I don’t mind the ones that are too similar. I’m disliking one that is high contrast and both fabrics feel flat to me. I’ll wait until I can see it up on the design wall but it’s bothering me right now.

  6. Oooh, I love all the pairings and wouldn’t pull anything. If I had to guess, I think your super critical eye dislikes the twelfth strip set, somewhat similar in color together.
A favorite quilt I made was with pinks, purples, orange and yellow fabrics – I named it ” Kind of Wild” bc of the colors and the recipient loved it.

    1. I actually like the sameness of that one. I like when you see the pattern appear and disappear across a quilt top. but it’s possible I won’t like it once it’s in the quilt. But that’s not the one that’s bothering me.

  7. Hi from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. The only one that looks just slightly out of place to be is the very last one. I think you’re right about eliminating some dark purples it really takes away from the blended combos in the other blocks. Just my suggestion since you asked but it’s your quilt so do what you like they are all just beautiful!

  8. Which one don’t you like?

Based on your comment about avoiding dark purples, either the last photo, or the one with the orange dot and dark purple border print, which has high contrast than the others.

    I like them all.

    1. Yup. the one with the orange dot and really dark purple/black. It feels wrong. I’ll wait to make a decision until I can see it done and on the design wall, but it feels wrong to me.

  9. I would eliminate the one with the oebcuks ir tge tekkiw oijja dit becayse the contrast is too strong between that and the purple print and it will stand out in the quilt.

    1. Hmmm. Fingers on wrong keys? I think you’re saying the orange polka dot with the darker purple/black print. And that’s the one that I’m not happy with. Too flat. No movement.

    1. I’m not crazy about that one but don’t dislike it. It may come out… depending on how it looks when the block is done and it’s up on the design wall. that’s not the one that’s bothering me.

  10. Well, I was way off! I like them all, but if I had to choose, it was either 5 or 7. 5 because that larger print when cut in the Orange area, reads too close to color of the small print and I think it may blend too much – become mushy. So maybe you can cut around it? And 7 I chose strictly because it’s two nearly identical large prints combined. As a rule, I always try to mix scale – but maybe that becomes too matchy-matchy with repetition?

12 to me was a very safe combo (for you) as the colors are very matchy, but the scales are opposite and both echo the circle theme. I like it. Your screamer, #11, didn’t strike me that way at all. But since it may not fit your end vision, why not set aside 4 high contrast screamers so it has friends? I like 15! Nice contrast, related colors. While I’d never wear them as a skirt blouse combo, I think they’re great in a quilt. Besides, I’ve got a thing for sapphires and purples.

Thank you for this glimpse into your minds eye. I really enjoyed this immensely! And I cannot wait to see your finished top!!!

      1. Lol! It’s what those of us not born with natural talent do to try to develop some compensatory skills. I love looking at yours and Wanda’s quilts in hopes of absorbing some little bit of skill.
Keep em coming! They’re always gorgeous!

  11. I think you have quite a few quilter hooked on these quilts of yours!
I’ll begin to pick fabrics soon and have the cutter set up on the table.
Your latest is super and I’m liking the colours you’re going with in your latest one, very warm and rich looking.

    1. Oh really? I LOVE that pencils fabric! I love how linear it is and the way it’s so different from all the other more natural fabrics.

We have hit our rainy season and it’s wet, wet, wet. I wish we could send you some of this rain..
