My Productive Jag and 35 Blocks Done

I continued on my somewhat feverish productive jag this evening. After work I fed the dogs… my last evening meal for Ernie and Bogart. Their owner showed up to take them home around 7 pm. It’s really quiet here without them.

After my dinner I packaged up three of my friend’s finished quilts for shipping and ran to the Post Office and got them on their way. It was raining nicely so we didn’t get an evening walk.

When I got home I hit sewing room, determined to finish the last ten blocks needed for my Another 16 Patch quilt. And I did it!

I felt like I wanted a little more orange in this quilt top so I focused on orange blocks tonight.

Once these ten were done I popped them up on my design wall just to see how it all looks.

I have to say that I really like this, but it doesn’t look anything like what I was thinking it would look like.

This will be a generous throw size quilt top. As it it now it measures about 65 x 80. I like it when I can cover my feet and my shoulders and don’t have to decide between the two.

These blocks have just been tossed up on the design wall as I’ve made them so there is no rhyme or reason or plan to any of this. Tomorrow night I’ll pull all the blocks down and start all over. I’ll sort them all by color or dominant color, then I’ll basically “shuffle” all the blocks to get color distribution. Then they’ll go back on the wall and I’ll look at it for a few days, make occasional changes, maybe make a new block or two to replace blocks I don’t care for… and by the weekend I might be ready to sew it all together.

In the mean time, here’s some eye candy.

My dogs appear to be pretty exhausted after their five days with enthusiastic little visitors. Bender fell asleep in the hall outside my sewing room and didn’t stir as I walked by several times.

And a final photo of Rico (50 lb beefcake!) and Ernie (15 lb cup cake).

Even my co-workers are going to miss Ernie on our Zoom calls.

      2. Thanks! This is so great to hear! I think we’re sometimes afraid to try something because it looks complicated or difficult. But when we strike out and do it we find it’s not that bad. And doing new things really helps build skills and helps you make even more involved and complicated things in the future.

And I love those little bucket bags too!

  1. Sweet ❤️ I love that eye candy! Thanks for sharing 💕. My goodness, Rico and Bender definitely will miss their friends. I lost my Dad yesterday, he didn’t quite make it to 97 yrs young. RIP dear Dad.
Hospice makes teddy bears from loved ones clothing. My Dad had a lot of plaid cotton shirts. I will let them make 3 for grand kids. I will save a few shirts and make a small throw.

  3. Loving your blocks….I’m just a huge fan of orange and purple and you’ve done both just right. We must have shopped at the same site, I have those same rugs in our den! A nice change from solids. If you remember, I had commented on our No pledge drive Pledge drive. The goal wasn’t met by 150,000, so they went to the regular fund drive chatter. Goal was finally met and I’ve asked how many new pledges we recieved…l will be interested to know….
    Sew on!

  4. The quilt blocks are looking really good, Anne. Definite eye candy.

I told a sewing buddy about you yesterday so look out for an email from Elizabeth wanting to subscribe. I couldn’t remember how I did this…

Still no further forward with my Frankenbag as have been frantically putting samples together for my C&G course final quilt but I’ll get there eventually especially as it occurred to me a bag makes a great Christmas gift for donations to the foodbank!

    Happy sewing,

  5. Adding more orange really makes all of the colors pop! Ernie is just so cute! It’s so nice that you can dog sit for others, not all dogs like to have company. Sorry for your loss Leslie, may he rest in peace… Jan in MA

    1. My dogs were very welcoming. Five days with four male dogs in the house and never a tussle or argument! Such good boys!

My friend who owns these boys will stay with my dogs in a few weeks when I travel over a long weekend!

  6. I love seeing all your new strip quilt tops! Are you basically following a pattern or did you dream this up on your own? I’m sorry if I missed it if you’ve already mentioned it.
    Your productivity is astonishing, BTW!

    1. I’m not really following a pattern, but I’m using the principles I learned from making 16 patch quilts. It’s basically the same construction, except that you sew two strips, cut, sew, cut, sew until you have 8 rows, instead of stopping when you have four rows.

Wanda at the Exuberant Color blog has a fantastic tutorial for making a 16 patch quilt. You should check it out!https://designrr.s3.amazonaws.com/vickib_at_carolina.rr.com_31594/2bd0c54b40da73ea8a37b6e9a1a0969e4a5b6485bf96f9b1705156fb7bbdcdd3

    1. Thanks Wanda. I’m thinking I might be happy with these blocks and not have to toss any out. It’s amazing how things that stand out calm down as you add more blocks.

I can’t wait to see yours done!

    1. This is made from 2.5 inch strips cut width of fabric. I always try to cut WOF strips from scraps that aren’t huge but will allow a strip or two to be cut from them. That way I always have a collection of strips in my scrap box!
