Wrapping Up Another UFO

I met a consultant I know through work for lunch today at a restaurant we love in Lake Oswego, OR, for some yummy tacos, chips and guacamole, and spicy Margaritas. We used to go to lunch at this restaurant every couple months before the pandemic hit. I saw her for the first time since the pandemic hit a few weeks ago when we had a lunch meeting with a vendor we both work with. It was so much fun to see her so we agreed to meet for lunch today. The food was so good. The margaritas were soooo delicious, and the company was wonderful.

After having a couple of cocktails with lunch, I wasn’t worth much the rest of the afternoon. So I spent a few hours catching up on emails and my to do list.

I’ve had a sore knee this week so decided to not walk today to give it a break. My boys don’t like this at all, but they got several play sessions in the back yard so that helped.

After feeding my boys dinner I hit my sewing room to make the binding for my NY Beauty wall hanging. You know how much I like making bindings!

It didn’t take very long because the quilt is only about 36 inches square. So before long I was wrestling it all through my machine.

Sewing this binding to this small quilt makes me really glad that I don’t have to sew binding to a big quilt!

Once I got it sewn on I had to find a video to remind myself how to join the two ends of the binding together. I do it so rarely that I always forget how to do it.

It’s really simple to do. I once purchased a special ruler to join bindings and this method is so much easier!

Once I got it joined I pressed and sewed that final section.

Then I pressed the binding and got it all clipped in place. I’ll hand sew it later.

I really like that pop of orange for the binding. It’s such a wonderful color with the blue border. It’s also in the quilt.

I’m not putting a sleeve or other hanging devices in this piece. I’m going to hang a small curtain rod on the wall above my sewing machine and will hang this using curtain rings with clips. That will make it easy to switch out different pieces when I need a change.

I didn’t walk today but noticed some lovelies on our walk last night.

More and more roses are blooming.

The peonies are starting to open up. Look at this gorgeous monster!!! It must have been more than six inches across!

I think this might be some kind of Lupine.

And the threes are showing all kinds of new growth…. so soft and so green.

I’m meeting a former coworker for lunch tomorrow. He retired at the end of last summer and I haven’t seen him since. I’m looking forward to it. But there will be no Margaritas tomorrow!

I have Monday off for the Memorial Day holiday, then I’m taking Tuesday off. Some friends and I are planning a get together here at my place on Monday.

  1. Lovely post, Ann. Your quilt looks fantastic; I love that orange binding against the blue. Also those flowers made my heart sing.
Sorry to hear about your knee- too much pickleball?!
Sounds like you have a fun weekend coming up, enjoy!
I’m just back from Scotland where my City & Guilds tutor held an exhibition for all our work. It was such fun meeting all the women I’ve got to know over zoom these last 2 years and the work was extraordinary. I felt very honoured and proud to be included.
My weekend is getting my house back in order and then seeing my family for a bbq.
    Happy holidays x

    1. I absolutely love this small quilt! It’s gorgeous! Do you by chance know the pattern or where I may find something similar? I have a lot of Kaffe fabrics and I’d love to make this! Thanks for any help.

      1. this is a free pattern called Sausalito. you should be able to find it with a Google search. it’s a relatively simple NY Beauty pattern. So it’s a good place to start.

  3. Your New York Beauty Quilt is just that, a beauty! I love the pattern but your color selection just makes it pop. Wow!
You used fabric you liked rather sticking to Kaffe Fassett’s, correct? ( He is relatively new to me. Again, just gorgeous!
Hope that your knee is soon feeling better!

    1. I started this quite a few years ago… back before I knew people could frown on combining non KFC fabrics with KFC fabrics. I like the KFC fabrics combines with other stuff. this was just KFC fabrics and batiks. but I think it works.

      1. I actually love the combinations too. I have the material purchased for a Kaffe Fassett quilt pattern and am using batiks and hand painted fabrics as well. I think if you like it why not. It sets the quilt apart from all the others!

    1. I linked to the video in my blog post. If you read through email, look for the photo of the woman’s hands on the small quilt with the pink binding. that photo is a link to the video. it shows up oddly in email but I tested it and it works.

  4. I just love this wall hanging. I remember seeing it in a previous post, and I really liked it. And I had to laugh when I saw the still image of the binding video as I go back to that one, too! It is short, to the point, and very helpful. And I, too, once bought the ruler for the binding, but this video is easier, in my view, and simpler. Congratulations on finishing yet another UFO!

  5. Hi there. Have been following your adventures on all things for about 6 months. Love seeing your KF quilting posts and love hearing about your dogs and recipes. Intrigued with notion of long armer adding the bindings- where does the squaring up of the quilt happen ?

    1. I bought a small TV for my sewing room a few years ago. It helps me stay in the sewing room for more time. I don’t get as bored with the sound on. I tend to stream YouTube… find one video and then just let them flow after that. Or I like putting on classic movies. they make great background.

    1. NY Beauty is a more generic term for that type of block. it’s common to have the circles, the arcs with spikes. They just vary in complexity. This one is pretty simple, as they go. the pattern I used is called Sausalito.

      thanks for reading!

  8. As always, I enjoyed your post. That New York Beauty is so wonderful in the fabrics you chose, it almost makes me want to try one. My one attempt at paper piecing was a disastrous pineapple mess, so maybe not, but your wall hanging is stunning. Hug your boys for me.

  9. Hello Anne, Your New York Beauty is so colorful and vibrant! Love it! I made one years ago that I still like, but it doesn’t have near the contrast and vibrancy of yours.

Do you know the name of the tree in this post? Could it be called a Monkey Puzzle tree? I saw some in Tacoma, WA many years ago. They’re captivating for some reason. I first saw them in Scotland in 1994. Have a blessed weekend,Ann

  10. I just wanted to say a big thank you for your delightful posts. I love hearing about your gorgeous dogs and your wonderful creativity. Your home looks so lovely and the weather seems very much like mine in Suffolk, UK. We live in a little village, Woolverstone on the Shotley peninsula. It is early summer, still a little chilly for the time of year but the garden and our allotment are springing to life. We have an elderly King Charles Spaniel, Blenheim colours, called Milly who we adore. She is almost blind, can’t hear much, no teeth but absolutely beautiful in person and nature. The kindest and most gentle creature. My beloved Daddy died last year at the age of 92 and I miss him so much. Milly has been such a comfort. I am a textile artist, mixed media and coloured pencil student! I have done some patchwork and just love your work, especially your choice of fabrics and colours. I am struggling to create at the moment but so enjoy reading about your life. Sorting out my dad’s house and possessions has been a struggle and still more to do. I am hoping that I will be able to concentrate on making some art very soon.
    With my very best wishes

  11. Your New York Beauty is indeed beautiful. It’s incredibly striking. I wish you had told us the name of the binding video, I have used the binding tool too and find it difficult. I do make very large quilts all the time and wrestling with the quilt trying to get that binding perfect is a problem at times. I have to sew them on the machine now as my hand hurts horribly for days if I hand stitch. I do hope you are recovering from your knee pain, I had knee surgery scope two weeks ago and the pain isn’t fun. Have a great Memorial Day weekend.

    1. this was made with foundation paper piecing. it’s actually a pretty simple NY Beauty block. there are a lot out there that are much more involved and complex with multiple spike arcs and rings. I started simple and will likely never make another one!

  17. I love the colors in your NYB quilt. An older friend of mine, (mid 70s) gave me her templates saying she probably won’t make it again. It seems so overwhelming that I haven’t started it yet. You’ve inspired me to at least pull out all the templates and stare at it.

    1. A lotto people read my blog via email. when I publish s blog post it automatically sends it in email form to my subscribers. I don’t think the videos display well in email. I looked it last night after a couple people asked for the video, and in the email the video just looked like a photo. It’s. a good reason to check out the blog and not always rely on email.

  22. Oh gosh, your NY City is gorgeous, with the same orange accent in quilt. Great share of what is blossoming in your neck of the woods! A spectacular time of year when the new growth of leaves & needles are so very vibrant/ as are most of your quilts yearly. Thanks for sharing & glad to know you are going to rest an ailment for a bit…you do have a lovely back yard for the boys to frolic about! I’m thinking pickle ball competition & all your chores, take a break ;)))

  23. That is gorgeous!!! Anne, you should take a few minutes sometime and watch how Jenny Doan, Missouri Star, finishes her binding. She learned from a customer and I love it, so easy, no tools needed and is beautiful. Just a thought. I dearly love your Wensleydale quilt, have my papers but no batiks so that is next for I do like those blues. Pam
