Productivity on a Rainy Friday Night

I worked hard today and finally pulled myself away from my desk at about 6:30. Exhausted.

I really wanted to get the boys, and me, out for a nice walk tonight but it’s raining… just like it rained all day. So after dinner I hunkered down in my sewing room to chunk away on this new blue quilt.

I actually went back into my sewing room late last night after posting on my blog, which I rarely do. I finished eight more blocks, for a total of 16 blocks done.

Tonight I started with cutting the remaining blue fabrics I’m using for this quilt.

These are the four fabrics that haven’t appeared in blocks yet.

Once I had those fabrics cut I cut a bunch of the sharks tooth for the corner triangles.

I was extra careful to make sure that I lined up my squares with the right side of the fabric up and cut them with the correct diagonal direction.

I also cut a bunch of the sashing strips for the center pieces.

Then the next thing I decided to do was to fix the block that had corners that were cut incorrectly. I picked out the wrong triangles and sewed new triangles on.

Not my favorite thing to do, but I knew that I needed to get this taken care of or I’d end up making a new one and putting this one in the scrap bucket.

With that little annoyance out of the way I got into a groove and sewed up 16 more blocks, doubling the number of blocks I already had completed. Here’s all 16 blocks before they were squared up.

I thought I would stop there, but it was only 9 pm so I squared them up and tossed them up on the design wall.

I’m really loving how this is turning out. I love the blue fabrics and how you see little sparkles here and there. And the sharks tooth triangles are pretty fun! I’m really glad I went to the effort to figure that swirling effect out. It’s definitely worth the time and brain power I put into it.

This makes a total of 32 blocks done. I’m thinking this quilt will be 8 blocks wide and 10 blocks high. So I’ll need a total of 80 blocks. That puts me very close to half way done. It’s quite possible I’ll make some good headway on this over the weekend. It’s going to be a wet one so I’ll spend a good deal of it in my sewing room.

Here’s a little eye candy.

And one more just because I can.

I’m supposed to play pickleball in the morning but with the rainy forecast it’s looking doubtful. We might get a break in the weather in the afternoon that will allow us a walk tomorrow. That would make my boys very happy.

I have to run to my local quilt store tomorrow to pick up some fabric I need for the quilt I’ll make when my friend visits. Oh, and I made plans with my brother and SIL today for them to visit me next weekend. They are quite relieved they didn’t end up here during our ice storm and four day power outage. So I need to spend a little time getting my house ready.

Here’s to the weekend!

    1. thanks! Putting fabrics and colors together is really my favorite part.

I can go on pretty productive jags. and these blocks go together pretty easily. It’s nice to have a fast project every now and again.

    1. It’s all Kaffe Fassett fabric. the black Sharks tooth hasn’t been out too long. There is a navy and white that looks black that’s been around for years. this royal probably came out a couple years ago.

  3. another beautiful quilt on its way to the finish line! I suppose the rain is helping since pickle ball keeps getting postponed. Hopefully the boys will be able to get a walk in. Enjoy your weekend ā™„ļø.

  4. Anne!Ā  I think this is my favorite so far!Ā  Love the spiraling Sharks teeth (hmm, the sharks are circling, perhaps a subtle hidden message?)Ā  And the airy lacyness of the overall quilt is beautiful.Ā  I found it interesting that while blue is my favorite color and I have more blues in my stash than any other color, I have very fewĀ  KFC blues other than Roman Glass.Ā  I tend toward the aquas and turquoise with purples and limes.Ā  Now I have to add more of those softer, truer blues.Ā  In the meantime, I need to adopt your dedicated approach to start and finish one at a time.Ā  I’m awesome at starting, not so much finishing. šŸ˜Sent via the Samsung Galaxy S22 5G, an AT&T 5G smartphone

    1. I’ve had some of those blues in my stash for a few years. I wonder how hard it would be to collect a bunch of the more airy blues now. I feel like the kFC fabrics are much more saturated now.

I’m hoping some people make this in different color ways. I’d love to see it. There are some fun color combos of the sharks tooth that would make a good base for the color story.

      1. Not real ferns, but have you seen this Kaffe?   Periwinkle and white and one of my favorites!I agree, this quilt would be fun to see in other color schemes.  Maybe they’ll pop up after your tutorial.  I can see purple and orange, another combo I love.Loved your frog choir, making me dream of spring.  We’ve had very odd weather here in the Northeast, but nothing as severe as your ice storm.  All the snow we had has completely melted and now we’re getting very heavy, wet snow.  It looks like it will be warm enough to hopefully not cause tree damage or power outages, but we’ll see.  I’m happy your boys are getting more walks in now.  Nothing’s worse than working dogs with no way to expend all that energy!  Hugs to both of them. Now, I’m back to finishing a simple blue & grey flannel Yellow Brick Road throw for my daughter.  I over-purchased and realize I have more than enough to make a second one!  I may cut out 10″ squares and set aside for later.  I have many projects in various stages of completion, which I need to finish to get my room in order.  And on top of that, I committed to a “slow-along” for a ByAnnie ‘Get Out Of Town” duffle bag which starts this week.  I’m hopeful to stay on track to finish not one, but two simultaneously and still continue completing quilts.  We’ll see.I look forward to your next post!  Have a great Sunday!Sent via the Samsung Galaxy S22 5G, an AT&T 5G smartphone

      2. I love the Kaffe ferns fabric and have some in the periwinkle. I actually had it in the packet of blue fabrics I’ve hoarded away. but it felt too flat for this quilt. but it might be a really nice option for the sashing strips.

And yes… these dogs need some activity! Going to head out for a morning walk now!

  5. I love your quilt, but I wasn’t prepared to after first seeing the shark teeth fabric. I am in love with some of Kaffe’s fabrics but definitely not all of them. You have a great eye for mixing his fabrics into a outstanding quilt and I think this one is just perfect. I imagine seeing this quilt in person would be a big treat for my eyes. You certainly know how to make beautiful colorful quilts.

    1. This is definitely better unperson than in photos. In person you can really see all the details in each fabric. It’s sort of glorious.

Thanks for reading! I love the color!

  6. That quilt is looking gorgeous! Again, brilliant use of the shark’s teeth. You gotta take a snap of this one and send it to the KFC!! I particularly like the way the morning glory print sparkles in and out of the grid. Hope it ends up in a quilt show going forward!

    1. I’ll share this on the KFC Facebook page when I have all the blocks done. It’s definitely different from anything I’ve ever seen on that page.

And yes… the morning glory is a lovely little feature In this quilt!

  8. I love this quilt. Blue is my favorite color and the fabrics are beautiful. You do a good job with colors. I did some ripping last night also, the center piece in the block was cut a little too small. I’m making a Chandelier Quilt, out of scrap batiks, but setting it together on point is taking a lot of time, just to get the colors in the right position We are having rainy, dreary days in Kansas, but the snow and ice are all gone. Best to you. Phyllis

  9. I am really liking the looks of this quilt. The first time you pulled out the fabric I said Oh that would be more airy looking than what she normally does. Sure enough your next email said airy also. Love the look..you are winning me over to a moreall over pattern look. (Scary to mix patters and color for me)

    1. It’s always nice to see that you’ve achieved what you set out to achieve. I knew that I didn’t want dark and saturated blues in this quilt. I love all the little white and light bits that add sparkle to this quilt. I’m pretty happy with it.
