Productive Day and a Damned Yellow Jacket

We had a pretty productive day.

My day started early with pickleball at the church. I didn’t play great, which I expected since I haven’t been playing or practicing with my friend here. But I did have fun and there were some good things.

When I got home my friend and I ran a couple errands and then headed out to my long arm quilter’s place to deliver one of my quilts and my friend’s three quilts. I love looking through quilting designs for each quilt and choosing thread colors. And now I can’t wait to see all four of them done! I’ll have to wait a month.

On the way home we stopped at a fabric store to see if they had one piece of fabric I wanted. When we were leaving I was standing by the car in the parking lot and a yellow jacket got under the strap of my Chaco sandal and stung the arch of my foot THREE TIMES!!! It hurt like a sonofabitch!!! It still stings tonight.

Since I was stinging from the yellow jacket, my friend took me for frozen yogurt to make me feel better… like I’m five years old. And it did! We decided it was our lunch and a good lunch it was!

Once we got home we hunkered down and laid out the center section for my Libby quilt.

Then we chunked away at sewing and pressing all the rows. We had it done in no time.

I’m so happy with how this is turning out. It’s much brighter than I thought it was going to be.

There is one thing about this that bothers me, but it is what it is. The two red pieces that join in the corner are bothering me. I wish I had separated them better. But I’m thinking it won’t be so obvious once the corners are all on.

After a dinner of leftover salmon, oven roasted potatoes and a nice green salad with some of my garden tomatoes, we headed back into the sewing room and put together one corner for this quilt. We got it done pretty quickly.

That’s the only corner we’re going to be able to finish because I have three fabrics on order that I didn’t have enough of. One will arrive Thursday, the other two will arrive Saturday. We’ll finish what we can and then I’ll just have to cut and sew in three strips to finish the last three corners.

The biggest challenge is the I’ll have to mark and cut all the corners by myself. But it will be a little easier because I’ve already done it.

I’m really liking how this quilt is turning out. I’m glad that it’s totally different from the one we made a few days ago. It will be fun to see it all some together.

Here’s some eye candy…

Tomorrow we’ll work on the remaining three corners. We’ll probably have to find something else to do to fill the day.

My friend heads home on Wednesday and I’m back to work on Thursday. It makes me sad to think that my vacation is nearly over.

  1. Sorry to hear about your bee sting. If you use tobacco on a sting of any kind, it relieves it pretty quickly. We kept tobacco in the fridge, as I grew up “in the country” in East Texas. Just put a little bit of water on a small amount and hold it on affected area until pain subsides. In a pinch, cigarette tobacco will work as well!

    1. Beekeeper here! Yellowjackets are not bees, they are in the wasp family aka hornets. Alas wasps have smooth stingers which they can withdraw and re-deploy with gay abandon, so they can get you multiple times, and can afford to be pugnacious.

Bees, on the other hand, have barbed stingers and that means one sting and they die! So bees are VERY reluctant to sting. Hornets/wasps, not so much.

  4. Sorry about the yellow jacket!!

Love those quotes that you’ve made that you’ve made!! They are both marvelous, although I always lean towards one with the black background!

  5. I can’t wait to see your finished quilt. What you’ve completed so far is beautiful. The black was a great choice. Sorry you were stung by a yellow jacket but happy to hear that frozen yogurt helped you feel better!!!

    1. Frozen yogurt helps nearly any ill feel better… as long as it’s topped with the right amount of chocolate and nuts!

I’m pretty happy that I went with teh black rather than the white. I’m really liking how it looks.

    1. I’ve had two wasps nests in my yard during the last few years. One year there was one right by my water spigot so I was near them regularly and NEVER got stung all summer. And now I’ve been stung TWICE in the last few weeks! I’m so glad I’m not allergic!

  6. Yellowjackets can sting multiple times and not lose their stinger. They are aggressive. But “The Yellowjackets” are cool. Love their music.

Wow! Love this! The black really makes the colors sing! You are lucky to have a quilt shop nearby and one willing to order your fabric. I hope the dyelots aren’t far off.

This quilt may need to be added to the ever growing bucket list of quilts. LOL

    1. I’m pretty sure I smooshed the yellow jacket with my other foot some time during the third sting!!! Ouch!!! And so much profanity!!!

I am very lucky to have a good quilt shop near by. But they didn’t order the fabric for me. I ordered from several different Etsy sellers. the shipping is sort of ridiculous!

      1. Ouch! Well now they don’t live to sting another day. 👍
Agree, shipping is my tipping point. Is it really worth it? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I shop around on different sites for best price and shipping, I am sure you do that too.

  8. Love both of the quilts, yours and your friends! All the colors and patterns. I don’t think that you will ever tire of looking at it! As a beginner quilter I think keeping the pattern in order would make my head spin. Maybe someday!

    1. This pattern is really detailed and organized. but it might be a little too much for a beginner. But you’ll be ready for it some day!

It really did help to have extra eyes and hands to keep everything organized and in the right order.

  9. So sorry about the stings, I had a wasp fly by me and sting me on my cheek a few years back, it hurt but never left a mark. I’m loving your fabrics and design and I too noticed those two colors being similar but I think when it’s finished, it won’t be noticeable at all. Thank you for all the closer pictures of the fabrics, they are so striking.

    1. Funny… I got stung on my temple a few weeks ago during one of Rico’s sheep herding lessons. Just completely out of the blue. It stung but not for long. I’m thinking the one on my foot hurt more because I got stung multiple times.

I’m thinking when the arms of the criss cross are all in place the red pieces will make more sense… ore they’ll stand out even more… oh well. it is what it is!.

  10. Hi there…I so enjoy your posts about your adventures, trips and interests. Your quilting is inspiring, as is the determination and efficiency you bring to the projects. The photos from your vacation look AMAZING!

    There’s two things I’m writing about…

Firstly…Can you please remind me about the recipe for your pork and green verde chili stew? I’m sure that’s not the right name, but you made it last year and did a big batch so you could freeze it. It sounded delicious…but one of the ingredients, I think the chili verde is not available in Europe. As I’m presently visiting my sister in Dallas, I wanted to try and buy it, so when I’m back home I can make a batch.

Secondly…I have made two Frankenbags…, one of which was a gift for my sister, whom I presently visiting, (alas, I’m not sure how to send you the photos) but your instructions are superb, detailed and precise. I think this is amazingly generous of you…and with that thought in mind I have a small gift that I’d like to send you ( I figure…I’d have easily spent 15-20$ on a pattern). Postage was cost prohibitive from Germany…but as I’m in Texas right now, I can send it to you. However…if this sounds weird and you’d prefer not to give your address out to a total stranger I totally get it! Maybe you have a post office box address?

Anyway, thank you for your posts (which I always look forward to) and for the excellent patterns and instructions.

I hope the return to work later this week is not too hard.
    Kind regards
    Djna

    1. I’m so glad you recognize my efforts for efficiency! I like to find better ways to accomplish things.

here’s the recipe for the chili verde I make. I’ve been making it for years. My friend who is visiting is the one who gave me this recipe.https://denvergreenchili.com/award-winning-recipes/champion-green-chili/world-champion-green-chili-2006/

You’re too generous to want t send me a gift. I’m happy to give you my address but I don’t like to put it out on my blog. So if you email me at anne@agilejack1.com I’ll send it to you.

Thanks for reading! I’m trying to mentally prepare myself for work later this week. I’d love to have more vacation time!

  12. The black fabric is working better than I thought it would. You have enough bright fabrics in there to make it work.
I got stung by yellow jackets about 6 or 7 years ago, several stings on my ear and neck. You are right, they are painful!!! The girl helping me clean out the garden bed got stung in many places because she uncovered the opening to the nest.

    1. I’m finally feeling like I made the right decision. It’s not easy to find those bright Aboriginals. I still have three pieces on order that I need to finish the corners on this.

I’ve had yellow jacket nests in my yard twice in the last few years. One summer it was right next to my water spigot. I didn’t get stung all summer after being in pretty close contact with them all summer long. So odd that I’ve been stung twice this summer.

My friend and I went to a restaurant for our last vacation dinner together tonight and were going to sit on the patio but the hostess told us there were some “aggressive bees” on the patio. So we opted for inside!
