A Weekend on the Sofa Coughing

I ended up sick this weekend. I started feeling something a little scratchy in my lungs last Wednesday. I felt fine on Thursday, but in the evening I felt the same scratchiness in my lungs. When I woke up Friday I had a full blown cold.

I’m pretty sure this happened because I was bragging a few weeks ago that, aside from my COVID case in May of 2022, I hadn’t been sick since the pandemic hit.

So, I do have a cold. I did COVID tests three times over the last few days and they were all negative.

I struggled through work on Friday but was so punk I spent all of Saturday napping on the sofa. I was supposed to play pickleball at a club event at a large indoor facility Saturday night, but that was not going to happen.

I feel much better today. I can tell that I’m on the mend. But I’m a little resentful that my weekend was wasted being sick. I would have been happy to take a sick day or two off of work.

If did manage to hit my sewing room tonight and get a little done.

Some time last week I made the lining for the Aboriginal fabric bag I’ve been working on. Tonight I pinned it to the body of the bag and got this bad boy done. Since this bag doesn’t have any zipper pockets or zipper placket, finishing it was a quick job.

Here’s the finished bag showing the lining.

Here’s a few more photos.

And, of course, I had to add my tag.

This bag will be shipped off tomorrow with one of the pin cushions I made recently.

It was nice to make a bag without having to do all the zippers. I might have to do a few more like this.

I had been giving some thought to what I could do for my pickleball teacher as the holidays approach. I decided that I wanted to give him (and his wife) a quilt that I’ve made. I had the contact info for his daughter because I helped connect her to people at a local medical center recently (she’s in med school), so I sent her photos of what I had and she said my Ice Storm quilt would be the best option for them and their decor.

After I finished up in my sewing room tonight I settled down on the sofa and started hand sewing the binding to get it ready to gift.

Oh man! I do LOVE that octopus fabric for the backing of this quilt!

I managed to get one full side of the quilt done. I feel pretty good with that progress for one evening.

I do LOVE a hand sewn binding. Too bad I hate doing them so much!

I do need to get cracking on a table runner for a friend for a holiday gift. It was a special request!

Last Tuesday was Giving Tuesday and it’s the day that kicks off all of our year end fundraising. I actually went into the office to be on they air live on the early shift.

I hadn’t been live on the air from the studios since the pandemic hit. I’ve been on air from my sewing room for nearly four years! It was fun to be in the studio again. And I had a huge studio all to myself. Probably a good thing since I ended up with a cold.

My boys have been terribly bored with me sick for a few days. Maybe we’ll be able to get out for a quick walk tomorrow.

  1. So sorry you’ve been unwell , horrid for you but on the positive side, you’re unlikely to get sick over the holidays now!

Fabulous quilt for your pickleball tutor and I love the bag and pin cushion, well done. Beautifully made as ever.

We made over £800 for the food bank. People loved the Frankenbags and I was amused one customer bought one to send to her American friend! We have an expression here “ taking coals to Newcastle” and that bag going to the land of patchwork greatly amused me!

I have one more week of foodbank activity then I can go back to being a retired person (!). It’s been exhausting but I’m so pleased with the amount we raised.

Take it easy as you can this week and I wish you a speedy recovery. Xx

  2. What a wonderful gift for your pickleball teacher and his wife. I’m sure they’ll love it! Your Aboriginal bag is beautiful, like all of the things you create. Great idea to include a pincushion. So sorry you were sick over the weekend. Lots of students at school have been sick – fevers and nasty coughs. They’re usually out at least two days, and the coughs hang on for a while. Glad you’re on the mend.

    1. I’ve pulled back quite a ways on what I’m making. I really went crazy the first couple years of the pandemic. I think partly just to have something to do. I’m trying to be a little more intentional in what I make now and not try to make all the things!

  5. Well it’s that season again for sharing colds. I’m getting over one myself. Rest and dream up your next quilt. Lucky coach who’s getting the ice storm quilt. That’s been one of my favorites since it was under construction. The octopus back is spot on perfect. Yummy. You look very happy back in the studio. I’m sure you’ve missed it based on your smile. What great ideas are you coming up with for Christmas decorations this year?

    1. I’m not doing much of anything for Christmas this year… having a hard time finding the holiday spirit.

I have some get-togethers with friends coming up. Maybe that will get me going!

  7. Condolences, you, we have had that cold, which seems to be going the rounds. Hits you like a freight train, and the cough and sniffles went on and on. Cold tablets and sleep are the only remedy…although I also like ginger lemon teas! LOVE that octopus fabric. BTW how thick do you cut your binding strips and do you go wider than 1/4″ when sewing in onto the quilt?

    1. I’ve been hearing from a good number of people describing exactly what you’re describing. It just goes on and on.

I cut my binding 2.5 inches, but I think it’s too wide. It’s wider on the back than I’d like it to be. I might make my next one smaller.

      1. I agree on the binding issue…I was just hand binding a quilt, first final finish in some time, and was not happy with the wideness left on the back. Will take it down a notch on the next one! I have not tried machine binding but perhaps that is when 2 1/2″ is more suitable??

      2. I’ve machine finished bindings on place mats and table runners and I really don’t like the finish. I much prefer a hand stitched binding. If I was to do a machine finished binding I would sew the binding on the back of the quilt and do the stitching from the front so I could control how it looks. If you stitch in the ditch from the front the back is just all over the place.

  9. Sorry to hear you’ve been sick. Rest is best for a cold. Thanks for your blog posts and the beautiful pieces work you do. Your crumb piecing video helped me tackle my own scraps to make 10 inch blocks which were then used for table runners. You are an inspiration in many ways.

  10. Wow, your coach and his wife are very lucky to get a quilt of yours – that is so generous of you!!! One of these days, I want to treat myself to one of your Frankenbags. I have made many quilts but never a bag as they intimidate me (especially with a zipper – Yikes!) I hope the final bits of your cold end soon and you can get back to your normal life. Happy Holidays!

  11. My quilt guild recently challenged member to make a tote bag using fabric scraps that they handed out. My bag of scraps had all sorts of chicken fabric in it and I was at a loss of what to do with it. I found your Frankenbag online and I made a Frankenchicken bag. I won a prize (a stack of fat quarters). Thanks for the inspiration.

  15. I was getting worried about you! I spent yesterday in ER and it was a zoo! They were sure I had RSV, but no, tests show acute bronchitis complicated by my asthma. Meds should get me back up and sewing in a few days but I haven’t sewn a stitch in over a week! What a great gift for coach/wife. I love that quilt! You sure do look happy in that work studio! Enjoy life!
