A Bit of a Lazy Saturday and Some Sewing

I got up early this morning and headed out for pickleball. I didn’t have a great night sleep and didn’t play very well. I was the host for the lower level play this morning so the games weren’t as fun as they have been the last week. Plus I didn’t feel great.

I took my boys with me and tossed their frisbee in the park and wore them out before we headed home.

Once we got home I plopped on the sofa with ice on my back and watched a movie. It’s been a long time since I was lazy and watched a movie…actually watched it. So it was quite enjoyable and my back felt better after the ice.

I did spend some time in my sewing room assembling my green and low volume blocks. I didn’t get it all done but I probably got about 75% of the way there before I pooped out. I can easily finish it up tomorrow and probably get the borders on as well.

Before I left my sewing room tonight I decided to play with Brandon Mably fabrics left over from my Interweave quilt. I just folded fabrics and stacked them up to mimic the blocks, then cropped the photos and dropped them into a document to see how they look together.

Here’s the result.

That sharks teeth does some really crazy stuff in a sashing!

I’m liking this! I may play with the width of those sharks teeth pieces and the size of the corners. But I think this is something I’ll actually make. I might play with the different colors of jumble for teh strips just to see what it looks like. There are a lot of options.

Here’s a couple of blooms we saw on the trail this week. Red blooming current and Oregon grape.

And then this beautiful bush that my plant app identified as Sand Cherry. It has the mostly lovely aroma.

Tomorrow is a quiet day with some pickleball in the afternoon. I haven’t decided yet if I’ll actually go or take the day off. It would be good for me to get out of the house. I’ll play it by ear and see how I feel.

  1. I know you have heard this multiple times from me as well as from many of your followers… You are SO talented! Even the mock up from just your Brandon Mably scraps is absolutely awesome! The sharks teeth play really well with the thin black and white stripes. The combination gives the whole design movement. I sure hope you make this quilt!!!

  3. oh my! That is just striking, I’m in love with this design. Please don’t do too much tweaking, it’s just gorgeous.

Hope you feel better soon. I haven’t felt great lately either but I’m your mom’s age, so it’s understandable. Watch another movie. We just watched Condor with Max Irons and it’s very good, a serial.

  4. Hi ! Your posts are so amazing…I am a huge fan of all your fabrics and quilts ! ( I am currently recovering from a broken ankle and am itching to get into my studio !) My son and his bride (and their dog and two cats) live in Portland…but in the NE in a bungalow. Your yard looks so gorgeous..I didn’t know there were homes with such large lots. Is it still in the city ? I am hoping to go through my stash to donate for our Guild’s fundraiser coming up….. I LOVE your posts !! 1. I live in SW Portland in Garden Home and have a half acre. There are a good number of these large lots left in my area but they are disappearing fast. they call them “Garden Home Gems.” Now they are being chopped up and having several houses built on them. I’m pretty close to down town Portland. Takes me about fifteen minutes to get into the heart of down town. I was really lucky to find this place!

  6. Love your Brandon Mably design and process using photos. Can you explain a littl–what program you used to drop photos. I have apple laptop. What you did was just amazing.

Loving your green you’ve been working on.  I HAD to buy some Kaffe/Brandon greens and do a low volume quilt which I’ve never done. Another project down the line, lol.

Hope you feel better soon–enjoy that pickleball, the boys and sewing of course. Hugs from Florida

    1. I take photos with my phone and then crop them to be square and get rid of any background. Then I add the photos to a Pages doc on my MacBook and size them about the same, line them up next to each other and rotate every other one. then I copy and paste blocks so I can make a quilt with just a few photos. I just copy and paste and keep arranging. Then when it’s done I do a screen capture and crop it to the edges of the quilt mock up and save it to my desktop. Easy peasy!

  8. Anne,

You’ve gotten into my head! First, I ordered a 8 KF fabrics from a Etsy shop in Washington state. The shops name is GrandmaKathy and she has a fantastic selection. She seems to sell only 2yd cuts, which means I can have plenty to play with. Then there were a few fabrics I bought from a shop in Kalamazoo MI: some 1/2 yds pieces. Between the 2 shops I did about $300 damage.
Then as usually happens, a shop I follow had a flash sale on KF fabrics; many I’ve wanted at $7.60 yd! OMG 😱 I sheepishly confessed to my husband what I had done…and immediately knew I made the best decision of my life 45 years ago.

I received 16 yards of GrandmaKathy fabric in a couple days. These are newer fabrics, and more gorgeous in person, than the photos. 💞 I am expecting another load in the next few days. WOW!🥳 I had many KF fabrics (FQ’s I planned to use English Paper Piecing) but none of them amounted to enough for a well thought out machine sewn quilt…🤔 I think I should be set for a while, and considering what I saved… I am a blessed, happy camper! 🥳

Thanks for your wonderful blog posts, and ideas. You’ve inspired me!

    1. If KFC fabric shows up for $7.60 a yard you have to buy a lot of it!!! it’s a great time to buy enough for a backing!

You have enough to keep you busy for some time! I hope you have fun cutting it all up and making something amazing!

  9. Wow, the new design is certainly eye popping, I love it!

I’d like to see what a version with slightly wider sharks teeth and smaller corners looks like…

Can’t wait to see it’s evolution!

  10. I am amazed at your weather compared to ours in CT. I believe you are further north than we are too. The mild weather and all the flowers so far surprise me. The colors just aren’t here yet like they are there.

Kaffe’s Collection always play so well together but I truly love how you separated Brandon’s out. Thank you for showing me how much I love Brandon’s fabric alone too. I’m looking forward to playing with Phillip Jacobs’ fabric with your patterns too. You have sparked so much creativity. Thank you!!

    1. Our winters are usually relatively mild. It doesn’t freeze every night in the winter and the day time temps are usually in the 40s or 50s. We are far north, but we’re a rain forest!

I had wanted to make something from just Brandon fabrics for a while. It was really fun to separate those fabrics out and see them all together. His designs are so light hearted. So much fun to create with!
