Green KFC and Low Volume Quilt is Done

Note: I’ve gotten so many requests for how I made this quilt that I’m adding some basic instructions to help you out.

Quilt is made from 8 inch Quarter log cabin blocks with low volume nine patches made from 3 inch strip sets. For the green blocks I started with a 2.5 inch block. Added 1 inch of stripe, 1-1/4 inches of white accent then green strips. Green strips vary in width… 1 inch up to 2 inches. I squared them up to 8 inches. You can find lots of tutorials on YouTube for making a quarter log cabin block.

Today was a gorgeous day with lots of lambs, I finished up the borders on this green KFC quarter log cabin block quilt this evening.

Putting borders on a quilt is not my favorite thing to do, but I persevered and got it done. So much pinning1

…. and pressing….

I’m really glad I decided to add that little striped border. This quilt really needed it!

And that climbing geranium in the larger border is really pretty1

And just a little bit of eye candy…

And one last one for good measure.

I’m so tired tonight. I don’t have in me to do my post on my second day of lambs. So I’ll leave you tonight with a couple of quick videos of Rico working sheep today.

That shows Rico doing some lovely driving and taking my commands so nicely! This next video is a quick little outrun, which was gorgeous, with a fetch (bringing the sheep to me).

I’m playing pickleball at 8:30 tomorrow. the weather is supposed to be glorious.

I have two goals for tomorrow. 1. get my tax materials prepared and off to my accountant. 2. trim my Aboriginal Libby quilt and make the backing. I’m picking up my friend Linda’s quilt on Sunday and want to take this Libby quilt to be finished.

Today was a specular spring day here. A perfect day for lambs!

  1. Happy Easter.

Your green kfc quilt is delectable, well done!
I’m waiting for my 3 yo granddaughter to arrive with her parents and baby sister so I can show her the lambs and puppy photos. So I need to start hiding some Easter eggs around the garden! It’s finally stopped raining, hoorah!

    Have a lovely weekend

  2. That border, OMG! It pulls the entire project together. The quilt is modern, yet wonderfully soothing. The first thing that popped into my mind when I saw the hammer was, “building/constructing a quilt”. I thought you were being funny, but then I realized you were using it as a weight. LOL

    1. So many people notice that hammer! I first brought it into my sewing room to use for adding snaps to a bag. It’s been there ever since and I use it all the time! It’s a pretty handy thing to have in my sewing room!

I love KF fabrics and really like the way you arrange your fabrics. Also I am a big fan of black and white stripes popping the KF fabrics.
Also we had a border collie many years ago and enjoy seeing Rico and Bender .
Have used your method for placket insertion for Frankenburg bags as I make many bags for gofts and myself.
    Happy Easter

    1. thanks! I love putting the fabrics and colors together. I’m not sure I’d bring anything to the collective that isn’t already represented but thanks for boosting my ego.

  6. I love watching Rico on the job. I wouldn’t want to lie down either, right in the middle of running and doing an excellent job. I love the away to me 🥰

    1. He really doesn’t like to lie down! it’s so much fun to keep going! His away to me is his natural direction! the come by side has been much harder to train but it very solid now1

    1. I’ll save the black and white stripe I have to use for the binding, but it will likely be years before this gets quilted. I have so many tops that aren’t quilted and I don’t have any plans or use for them!

    1. He is such a good boy! He has a lot of natural talent for sheep herding. His mom and aunt competed in the national competitions. But it has also taken a lot of training to get him to this point! He just loves it!

    1. It’s really handy to have him run to the water from a distance. That way I don’t have to walk him all the way to the water! But he would love it if I jumped into that pond with him!

  9. Loved how your green quilt evolved–just perfect. Now I’m collecting green Kaffe fabrics and the low volume. Can you pls tell me what approx size your quilt came to? As always, so enjoy your posts.

    1. Probably around 65×75… it’s a throw size quilt. You could make it bigger by adding more blocks or adding more borders. Someone on the Kaffe Fassett Facebook page made a red one and added several borders to make it basically king size. I think she used fewer blocks than I did.

Must make a quilt like this!

What part of the world do you live in? I live in Oregon. Rico is fabulous! Loved watching him work.

      1. Oh my gosh, really? You know, I thought the countryside where you were working with Rico and the sheep either looked like Oregon or New Zealand. But that much open land cannot be in Portland–must be out in the country somewhere! That’s so cool that you are in Oregon. I just love your KFC quilt. Must make one.
