A Busy Weekend and A Break From the Heat

We’ve been having really hot weather for about three weeks now. We had a few days of 100 or a little over and then a couple weeks of temps up in the 90s. I woke up this morning to the sound of thunder rolling across the skies and Rico very worried about all the noise. We got enough rain to wet my patio and that as about it.

What we also got was a break to this hot weather. Today was lovely. And the next ten days features temps in the mid 70s to low 80s. It will be so nice to be able to be outside a little more. My boys will be happy to get their afternoon walks back.

I’ve been busy playing pickleball the last week. I played Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, twice on Saturday and Sunday. I’ve entered women’s doubles with my friend who just moved here in two tournaments coming up in the next couple weeks. I’ve also entered one tournament in mixed doubles with my coach. We’re working hard to make sure we’re ready to play well. It will be interesting to see what the tournament life is all about.

I haven’t done much sewing the last week but I did hit my sewing room Friday evening and sorted through scraps and got ten little wallets ready to sew up.

Then tonight I got them all sewn, turned, pressed, folded and sewn closed.

I just love seeing those pretty and bright linings. the linings really do make these!

After out evening walk I got all the snaps installed.

These fabrics are all so pretty together.

I think I’ll probably keep this one for myself. I just love these colors.

Yesterday I played pickleball in the morning for two hours. Came home and grabbed the dogs and headed down to Molalla for Rico’s sheep herding lesson. Then I met my coach at 6:00 and drilled pickleball for nearly three hours! I was completely worn out.

I played pickleball this morning and then got a needed haircut. I went a little shorter this time. It’s good cut, lets my curls shine, and gets my hair off the back of my neck for the summer.

On the way home I stopped at a farmers market and found Boisenberries!

They are my absolute favorite berry. Put one in your mouth and press it to the roof of your mouth with your tongue and the flavor just explodes! t’s been quite a few years since I’ve had them. I cherished every single one of them!

I’m also very happy that my tomatoes are ripening! I’ve been watching these little sun golds quite intently. They are soooo flavorful and I’m really looking forward to some tasty maters in my salads.

With all the heat we’ve had Bender’s skill for finding the coolest place to sleep has come in handy!

That’s the spot where I find him every time I come home.

Another work week. I’m looking forward to working in the mornings with my sliding glass door open so I can hear the birds singing!

It’s Me. I’m Still Here.

I haven’t posted here since June 24! That might be the longest dry spell in many years.

Why? It’s been damned hot. I’ve been playing a ridiculous amount of pickleball. I’m doing all I can to take advantage of the short summer months here in the Pacific Northwest.

I haven’t been doing much sewing since my last post. I have made a few more of the scrappy blocks with the indigo corners. I think I’m up to 36 total. No idea how big this quilt will be.

I still have to trim most of those blocks, Since my injured wrist is feeling so much better I can start trimming them any day now. I’ll just chunk away on this. No hurry to get it done.

In the mean time, I just loved these two blocks.

I also picked up a little project a couple of weeks ago. I kept seeing an ad on Facebook and Instagram for a little wallet that looked really easy to make. They were selling a template to make the wallet for almost $20. I’m pretty cheap and I thought I could probably figure it out after a few tries. Well, I started digging around in YouTube and found this tutorial.

It’s the exact same thing as the template that was too pricey! So I took some notes and made my own template using a priority mail envelope.

Then I pulled out my interfacing, dug into my scraps and got busy.

I cut and sewed a few at a time.

I whipped up a handful of these cute little things in no time.

They are so quick and easy to make. I love having things like this on hand for little gifts when people visit or when I go to lunch with friends. Plus, I have a million uses for little things like this. I have one that I use for my iPhone headphones. I’m going to use one for bandaids in my pickleball bag.

They have the flap with a snap and two compartments inside.

Here’s a few images with some detail.

I gave almost all of these away pretty quickly. I’ll probably make a few more to have on hand.

I keep waiting for my quilting inspiration to come back. It’s not coming back quickly. I’m sure it will be back in full force when the rain starts in the fall. In the mean time I’ll do some small projects and think about what I’ll make when the mood hits.

I was talking to my friend who just moved here the other night. She was saying she needed something for the walls of her sewing room. I shared with her a pattern I’ve had for years that I’ve been wanting to make.

We tossed around the idea of making that at the same time. I’ve seen a few done in all Kaffe Fassett Collective fabrics that are really spectacular and colorful. That might have to be a winter project. My friend has a Singer Featherweight as I do. It would be fun to make them both on those little work horses.

I had my biggest strawberry harvest this evening… just when I was considering tearing out my strawberry plants because they just don’t produce much. I was thinking of putting in some raspberries instead. Maybe the the strawberries knew what I was thinking and kicked it in gear.

You may not know this but I’m a sucker for an estate sale. I was on my way home from pickleball a week ago when I saw a sign in my neighborhood for one. So I stopped by. And by did I score! I got a brand new Olfa cutting mat and a pristine Black and Decker iron for a total of $8!!!

I’ve been meaning to buy a new Olfa mat. I really hate the Fiskars mat I’m using now. It’s really slick and my fabrics slides all over the place on it. It may be on its way out and this one will find a nice home on my cutting table.

And I love a very basic iron. I had an old Sunbeam my mom bought me when I was in college that petered out a few years ago. I bought a new basic Sunbeam but it doesn’t get as hot as my old one. I haven’t plugged this Black and Decker in yet but I’m hopeful that it will be nice and hot.

My friend and I decided that we are going to play women’s doubles in a couple pickleball tournaments in July and August. And my coach asked me if I wanted to play mixed doubles in one of those tournaments. It will be interesting to dive into the tournament world and see if I like it.

I hope everyone is able to stay cool in this terribly hot summer. We’ve had several days over 100 and plenty up in the 90s. We have another week of hot weather and then it should cool down a bit. The good thing is that is cools down nicely at night. I’m so glad I have central air conditioning.

Summer! Sun! Time Off and a Short Vacation

We had last Wednesday off for the Juneteenth holiday so I decided to take off Thursday and Friday to make a five day weekend. On Wednesday morning I loaded up myself and the dogs and. headed south on Interstate 5 on the four-hour trip to my brother and sister-in-law’s place near Bandon, Oregon.

It was a great few days! Absolutely perfect weather in a beautiful place only 20 minutes from the coast. My boys were very happy about having two beach visits in three days!

It was cool and windy on the beach on Thursday but it was glorious on Friday. We were all pleased to be there.

I enjoy my time at my brother’s place because it’s very relaxing, there’s no agenda, and no pressure. it’s a great place to spend a few days and step away from the stresses and frustrations of the world. Even if just for a few days, it was good for me to get away.

My boys just love it on my brother’s property. There are multiple levels, gates to run through, sheep on site and goats next door.

Rico really wanted to get in that pasture with the sheep!

Of course, we continued our family traditions.

And we gorged ourselves on rockfish tacos made with home made corn tortillas and veggies from my SIL’s gorgeous garden.

I drove home on Saturday and we were all sort of vegetables the rest of the day. I was tired from the drive and my boys were tired from two beach runs and constant running and exploring on my brother’s property.

I got up today and met my friend to do some pickleball drilling at 10:30. then there was a club meeting and snacks at noon followed by pickleball. I played pickleball from 10:30 until 4:00!!! It was really fun but I’m exhausted. I even took my boys for a walk around the neighborhood after dinner and grocery shopping.

I’m going to play pickleball tomorrow night, Tuesday morning, Wednesday night, and Thursday night. That’s a lot of pickleball this week!

I haven’t been doing too much sewing since I’m letting my wrist heal. I hurt it playing pickleball a couple weeks ago. It’s so much better but not ready for the pressure of cutting using the ruler with my left hand.

I finally dug into a sort of new, sort of old project a couple weeks ago. I had decided that I wanted to use my color wash blocks (you can see them here) and make them into basically economy blocks using my left over indigo batiks. The batiks are left over from my Wensleydale quilt top that I made last year.

So I had to figure out how big to make the corner triangles for the blocks and made a test block. I didn’t want to suffer all the precision that a precise match of points would require so I made the corner triangles a little bigger so that the smaller blocks will basically float once they are all sewn together.

those blocks are all trimmed and squared up. That cutting was hard on my wrist at the time so tonight I cracked out eight more blocks but will leave the squaring up until my wrist it a little better.

There will be a lot of different indigo batiks once these blocks are all done. It will look quite different once it’s all done.

So, why did I decide to use the blocks this way rather than make the color wash version? Well, the part of quilt making where the blocks are on the design wall and you noodle, move things, put them back, noodle some more… well, that’s not my favorite part of making a quilt and I had no desire to suffer through arranging these blocks in a color wash array. And I knew that these blocks would sit in my closet for a very long time if I tried to force myself to do a color wash. So I dug in!

I made a bunch of little kits combining colored blocks and indigo fabrics for the corners last week. So when I sit down to sew I can just sew and really move along.

These next sets are ready to go except that I need to cut the indigo squares in half.

I don’t know how many blocks that will make or how many I’ll need for this quilt top. I’m really playing it by ear and will remain flexible. The blocks will finish at 6 inches so I’ll need a good number of them.

My little garden is doing really well. Look at how gorgeous this lettuce is!

After enjoying the fresh greens from my SIL’s garden I decided to dig in tonight and use some of this for my dinner. I made a big salad with chicken, blue cheese, corn, pickled onions, strawberries and a nice vinaigrette.

It was a really delicious dinner! I love eating things that I’ve grown.

Between work and pickleball I have a hectic week coming up. I’m glad I’m well rested.

I’ll leave you tonight with this gorgeous pot of lilies on my patio.

Gorgeous Summer Weather and Some Making

We’ve had some really glorious weather the last few days. Summer has arrived with the first week of June. And how can it possibly be June already. In a couple short weeks the days will start getting shorter again.

Work has continued to be busy. We got word last week that our board has selected a new CEO who will start in September. I’m sure it’s going to be a very active year coming up.

I’ve been playing a lot of pickleball the last week. I played Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday! I didn’t play today because I hurt my hand playing on Thursday and I wanted to give it some time off. Luckily it’s my left hand so I still have my paddle hand and will be back on the court tomorrow morning for some drilling with my coach. It’s been so long since we have had time to drill. The rain made it difficult to play outside and he had surgery in March. He’s finally back to playing and with our gorgeous weather we’re all anxious to spend as much time outdoors as possible.

I haven’t done much sewing the last week. I did manage to make nearly 50 key fobs. I started with the leftover batiks from my recent palate cleanser project. I made almost 30 key fobs from these fabrics alone.

Here’s the video tutorial I used for these fobs.

Here’s a link to the original set of hardware and the tool I use to apply the hardware to the fabric.

I started with the pieces I cut last weekend then cut the fusible fleece pieces.

Then got all the fleece pressed to the fabric.

Once I had these all pressed I got to chain piecing the top-stitching.

I think I ended up with 38 fobs from these left over batiks.

They’re so pretty and they whip up really quickly. So when I had these done I decided to make one lanyard from some of that batik fabric. I had purchased the hardware for these a couple of years ago and have never made a lanyard. It was quick to make as well.

There are tons of tutorials on YouTube for making these lanyards.

I’m sure I’ll make more but I need to refer to a tutorial to see how long they make them. Mine turned out a little short but would work well for hanging a house key around my neck while I walk my dogs.

Today I dug in and sorted out some KFC scraps and cut another 20 pieces for key fobs. then I got them all pressed and topstitched.

I was so close to being done that I went ahead and finished sewing these pieces by folding the two ends together and stitching a line across.

Those are all attached by a thread. Once cut apart and trimmed, I added the hardware and then I was done.

I added these to the batik ones I made last week and the remaining ones from when I last made these and now have around 60 key fobs ready to be given away.

I really like having some of these on hand. They make nice little gifts or just something to give people who visit so they can have something I made. People love them! I think I have nearly ten of them in use at my house!

I’m getting closer to deciding what project I’m going to work on next. Might be a total surprise and a little impulsive.

Bored Dogs and A Batik Finish

I had a bit of a sleep in this morning and then treated myself to a tasty breakfast.

It rained all day today. At one point I thought it was light enough that I could get on my rain gear and get these pathetic dogs out for a walk.

But when I looked out the back door I could see that it was still raining pretty steadily. We got close to an inch of rain today. It did’t rain hard but it rained steady all day.

It should start to taper off tomorrow morning around 5 am. I’m supposed to play pickleball tomorrow night so I’m happy that will happen.

So while the boys were being pathetic I hit my sewing room between watching live pickleball matches. I managed to finish up my batik All Inked Up quilt. The first thing I had to do was whip up the four remaining blocks.

Then I moved a few things around on the design wall until I felt good about how it looked.

Next I put up all the sashing strips I needed to add to the blocks before I sewed them together. It turned out to be a bit of a mess because they wouldn’t stick to the design wall! Several times I had to pick up little piles of strips and try to figure out where they had fallen from. So I pinned them all up so I could get a good look and make a few final moves.

Once everything was where I wanted it to be and pinned in place I started sewing. I got three rows all sewn together before I took a break for dinner. Once I was back in my sewing room I had it all ready to sew the final seam in no time.

Once that seam was done I did the final press.

I love the back of a quilt when it all goes together nicely.

Once it was pressed it went back up on the design wall for a photo.

I’m still not happy with how the colors come out in the photos from the design wall. These photos were taken with the quilt on the bed in my guest room and they are truer.

Here’s the full view.

By this time Bender was quite bored with the whole operation.

Rico lost his patience much earlier in the day.

That is a very sad rainy day face.

Oh, and I just remembered. At some point today I decided to cut up the scraps from this quilt to make some key chains. I gave a bunch away over the last week and since I have the hardware I thought this was a good opportunity to make up some new ones.

I’ll probably pull out some of my Kaffe scraps and make more keychains while I’m at it. It’s great to have a bunch on hand, I give them away all the time.

I have a couple personal days off that I have to use before June 30 so I’m planning a trip down to my brother’s place. It will be nice to have a few days out of town.

Pickleball, Sunshine, Donkeys and Dogs

It was a lovely day today. Even more special because it’s going to rain tomorrow and Monday…. a lot! We’re supposed to get several inches of rain in the next couple of days. It will be good to get some rain. And that made it important to be outside as much as possible today.

I met my friend EA who just moved to the Portland area for some pickleball drills this morning. But when we got to the courts they were packed! Probably because rain is coming tomorrow so people wanted to get some good activity in. So we played a couple games until a court opened and then we were good students and practiced with drills for about 90 minutes.

When we got done EA said that there was a plant sale at a nearby donkey sanctuary that she wanted to hit. So I invited myself along and I’m so glad I did. We got to go into the paddocks with the donkeys and pet them and love on them.

This sweet donkey was shying away from other people but loved me! He liked the way I knew how to property scratch his neck and ears! He even followed me when I eventually walked away! This poor guy had been abused and must be hand fed. How can people be cruel to animals? I just don’t get it.

This little guy was so cute but was not into all the attention.

My friend took the best selfie of herself with this sweetie pie!

Isn’t that the most perfect photo?

Of course, I had to have her take a photo of me with this sweetie.

This girl was also appreciative of my neck and ear scratch skills. I think she would have let me scratch her for an hour! She was absolutely leaning into me she was loving it so much.

And now I find myself wanting a donkey of my own!

I took a sort of meandering drive home through the back roads with the windows and sun roof open… soaking in all the sun and warm weather before our soaking storm.

When I got home I got my boys leashed up and we headed out for a nice three mile walk. It was good for all of us!

It was a lovely walk on the trail and through the neighborhoods near my house. The peonies are gorgeous right now.

Each one is more wonderful than the last.

The roses are also really spectacular right now. There’s a reason Portland is called the Rose City.

They’re all over the place!

I can’t resist sticking my nose in almost every one of them.

I’ve been slowly chunking away on the purple and aqua batik blocks and only have four more to go to have the 20 I need for this quilt top.

This more close up shows the true colors a little better.

The pieces for the last four blocks are just waiting for me to get moving.

Once those blocks are done I’ll need to get everything arranged the way I like it and then add the sashing strips between the blocks. I’m pretty sure I’ll finish this top tomorrow since I’ll be stuck in the house all day with a heavy downpour.

I noticed this quarter size water drop on one of my hostas the other day. I’m guessing there will be a lot more of them tomorrow!

Getting Back in the Groove… a Little

I’m slowly getting back to normal after a few hectic weeks. Our weather has dipped a little away from spring with some rainy and cool days. Almost all our spring blooms are done and the roses are starting to show all their glory.

The peonies are just starting to open and the first blooms are gorgeous! This one must have been almost 8 inches across!

And some lovely red poppies… I just love poppies.

I’m sorry to say that Rico peed on that poppy after I took that photo. Bad dog.

And I’ve been lucky enough to have a few strawberries off my new plants. I wish I could get enough for breakfast some morning. I just love that I grew these!

And speaking of flowers… on Thursday afternoon my doorbell rang, which rarely happens. And standing there was a woman with a bouquet of flowers for me. They were from a consultant that I’ve worked with for years… to congratulate me on my recent award. They are so gorgeous and the entire house smells wonderful!

Over the last couple evenings I’ve been chunking away at the purple and aqua batik blocks. I’ve finished 12 of 20 blocks. I’m hoping to have all these blocks done this weekend.

That’s not the final layout… I’m just tossing these blocks up on the wall as I get them done.

This next picture shows how the blocks will be spaced out when this is done. Where the white of my design wall shows through will be more batik strips. So the plaid design will be accentuated with those lines.

I really wish I could get a good photo of those batiks. They are so dark in this photo. In reality they are softer and much more vibrant. I’m enjoying sewing with them. It’s been some time since I made a quilt from batiks.

I played pickleball again this morning then headed up to Washington for Rico’s weekly sheep herding lesson. The big field we usually work in was covered with tall grass, which means the dog would have a difficult time seeing the sheep. So we worked in a smaller field on some close work. Rico, of course, did an amazing job!

Once we were done I headed over to the large field at the Washington State University campus to let these boys run. And speaking of tall grass… it must have been a foot taller than it was last week!

The dogs were soaked in no time since the grass was wet from some rain showers. Bender got some sticky weed stuck all over himself!

They had so much fun running through that tall grass! And I had a hard time locating them at times. Rico got lost once… he went out quite a ways and got all discombobulated. He was trying to find me and follow the sound of my voice as I called his name. It took him some time and effort to find the right direction.

We got pretty wet out there as a pretty blustery little squall came through as we were walking. I’m glad I thought to put on my rain coat before we headed out. But it was a beautiful day, although cool.

I’m playing pickleball tomorrow morning with my friend who just moved here. Then I hope to get cracking on those quilt blocks. On Sunday I’m playing pickleball with the same friend and her husband and my pickleball coach. I’m looking forward to it!

I’m happy to have a nice long weekend.

Time For Another Palate Cleanser

I’m still ruminating on my black woven quilt so decided to dig into a new palate cleanser. You might remember that I did a palate cleanser quilt a few months ago.

I had quite a frenzy of productivity over the first few months of this year. That furor has abated but I’m finding myself ready to get back into my sewing room. So tonight I started a new palate cleansing quilt project — a project that will clear out my mind, be quick and easy to make, and get me ready for something more involved.

I’ve been thinking about this packet of purple and aqua batiks that I pulled together into a set a few years ago. The picture shows the pattern I had intended to make.

I never could get very excited about that pattern after I bought it. But I’ve seen several quilts made from this All Inked Up tutorial using Kaffe Fassett Collective fabrics recently and I’ve really liked them.

So I decided to use those purple and aqua batiks and got started this evening.

First, I pressed all those fabrics that have been folded and in that bag for years.

Once pressed, I cut four 8-inch squares from each piece. The pattern calls for 10 inch squares but I want to make this a rectangular throw size quilt and the smaller size will make that more workable and a better size.

The pattern also calls for a contrasting fabric for the strips in the blocks. But I decided to use the batiks in the quilt. All the fabrics in this package were 1/3 yard cuts. So I had enough for the 8 inch squares with enough left over to cut the strips for the accent pieces, and enough for a 2.5 inch WOF strip from most of the fabrics that I can use in a future project.

Then I combined four 8-inch squares with an accent strip so I could just fly once I was ready to sew. That’s 20 “kits” in that pile. Enough to make 20 large blocks. I’m planning to make this quilt 4 blocks by 5 blocks.

Once all the pressing and cutting and kit making was done I hunkered down and made four blocks because I wanted to get a feel for how this was going to look.

I’m still not quite sure how to layout the blocks. I’ll play with that once I have more blocks completed.

The blocks will be sewn together with a strip of sashing that’s the same width as the accent strips. This sashing helps establish more of a plaid pattern across the quilt top. This made me realize that I’m going to have to cut up all my left over 2.5 inch strips to Make the accent strips I’ll need. Well damn.

I’ve isolated one block in this photo so you can see what each block looks like.

This should go together quickly. I spent a good deal of time prepping the fabric tonight and still managed to get four blocks made. I would guess that I can have these blocks made before the week is out.

My friend Linda flew home yesterday. The house is very quiet. It rained all day today and I had to turn on the furnace. I had the air conditioner running just a week ago.

As our last hurrah while she was still here we headed to the coast on Sunday. It was a nearly perfect day and we all had a wonderful time.

I was worried that it would be really crowded, but we had some rain on the drive west and I think that little bit of weather convinced a lot of people to head home early. We had all the room we needed on the beaches.

When we first got to Cannon Beach we stopped at Center Diamond quilt shop. I bought one piece of batik. Linda bought a few pieces. Rico barked in the car the entire time we were in the store. As we were leaving a Cannon Beach police car pulled into the parking lot. I was sure they were there because Rico was such a bad dog. But they were actually there to drop off to ladies who needed a ride to the quilt store! Don’t you just love small towns?

After the visit to the fabric store we hit the south end of Cannon Beach and let the dogs have a good run. We walked for two miles. I’m guessing the dogs ran 15 miles!

Bender and Rico absolutely LOVE the beach! All the sand… the water… all that space to get out and really run!!! It’s their best day!

After we all had a good workout we headed south to the next beach and sat in the parking lot with a view to eat the lunch we brought with us. Then we headed south to Wheeler, Oregon, to grab some ice cream and ate it beachside in Manzanita. After we finished dessert we got the dogs out on Manzanita beach for another run before we headed home.

We were home by about 7 pm. We grabbed a quick dinner and while Linda packed for her trip home I cut the sashing strips and sharks teeth squares for the Blue Swirly quilt Linda bought fabric for earlier in the week. So all she’ll have to do is cut the center strips and then start sewing!

I played pickleball last night and again this morning. It felt great to be out there again. I hadn’t played since Linda arrived. I will play again tomorrow night.

My friend who recently purchased a house here for her retirement will arrive with her husband, three dogs and all their belongings in two days. We’re already planning our pickleball adventures!

Phew! I’m Back After a Hectic Couple Weeks

It’s been a whirlwind around here since I last posted here. We finished up a difficult and challenging radio fundraising drive. I had to make a quick trip to Las Vegas for work. I’ve had company at my house for over a week.

So, first off, I teased my Vegas trip in my last post. But now that it’s over I can share the reason for that last minute trip here. Several weeks ago I received a call letting me know that I had been selected as the 2024 recipient of the C. Scott Elliott Development Professional of the Year award. This reward recognizes Public Television development professionals who have had notable careers. I know a good number of people who have won this award in the past. It was a bit of a surprise that I had been selected.

I had to go to Vegas to accept the award and give a bit of an acceptance speech.

That’s a photo that my boss took. Here’s the official photographer’s shot with the actual award in my hands.

I didn’t get to bring the award home. I needs to be engraved and then they will ship it to me. I’ll share photos once I receive it.

It’s a pretty big deal to be selected for this award and I’m among a pretty impressive group of individuals. It’s really an honor to be selected. Here’s the pertinent paragraph from when I was introduced:

THIS YEAR’S RECIPIENT, IN HER 28-YEAR TENURE IN PUBLIC MEDIA, HAS LONG BEEN CONSIDERED ONE OF THE TOP LUMINARIES IN OUR FUNDRAISING INDUSTRY. THROUGHOUT HER CAREER AT THE TWO STATIONS SHE HAS SERVED, SHE HAS BROUGHT VISION, RIGOR, AND AN EXCEPTIONAL LEVEL OF SKILL AND INNOVATION THAT HAS HAD DEEP IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITIES SHE HAS SERVED. SHE IS KNOWN AS AN INNOVATOR, AN EXPANSIVE THINKER AND CHAMPION AND MENTOR TO NOT ONLY HER TEAM, BUT TO THE PUBLIC MEDIA SYSTEM AS A WHOLE. SHE LEADS WITH DETERMINATION, INTEGRITY AND A PHILOSOPHY FOUNDED ON THE PREMISE THAT WE SERVE A GREATER COMMUNITY, THAT MEMBERS PROVIDE THE FOUNDATION OF OUR PUBLIC SERVICE, AND THAT BEING A COMMUNITY SUPPORTED PUBLIC MEDIA SERVICE PLACES OUR MEMBERS AT THE CENTER OF WHO WE ARE AND EVERYTHING WE DO. SHE IS DOGGED IN HER PURSUIT OF A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE FOR PUBLIC MEDIA.

It was so odd to hear those words about me spoken from the podium! But it was really fun to see colleagues from around the country that I haven’t seen for years. Also had a lovely dinner with a chosen few to celebrate.

I had an amazing room in Vegas…. on the 57th floor with some pretty spectacular views. I could lay in bed and watch the fountain at Caesar’s Palace, could see the new Sphere, Paris casino, and a lovely view of the mountains.

Vegas is such a strange city. I really don’t see the appeal it holds for people. It was an honor to be there, but I was perfectly happy to be on a plane out of there and I was definitely happy to be home.

My friend, Linda, Flew in and stayed with my boys while I was gone, and I arranged to take the rest of the weeks off so we could have a few days together.

We’ve been buying way too much fabric! Linda decided she is going to make my Blue Swirly quilt for a friend of hers who loves blue. So buying the fabrics for that quilt was our task for today. We actually made our sixth trip to a fabric store today! And our third time to the SAME store! I’m happy to say that I didn’t actually buy any fabric today! I did buy a pack of 10 empty bobbins for my Bernina.

We were planning on going to the coast on Friday but we went out to dinner on Thursday, the day I came home from Vegas, and Linda had a bad stomach from that meal. So we’re hoping to get out there tomorrow.

Since we were near a big field that my boys love on our trek today, we stopped to give them a nice run in the tall grass.

They had so much fun in that grass. It was hard to get Rico to come out at all.

Bender, on the other hand…

We have had some productive moments over the last couple days. I managed to buy some tomato plants, lettuce starts, and a honey suckle and got them all planted.

I’ve wanted a honey suckle growing on this fence for some time. Fingers crossed that it thrives here.

Over the last couple days my friend has been helping me chunk away at finish my Brandon Leftover quilt top. And we got it done tonight!

I did all the sewing and Linda did the pressing. It goes so much faster with someone to press!

I just love seeing this all done!

And look at these corners! These make me pretty happy!

And with that, I’m starting to think about my next project. I had a bit of a change of mind today. I was thinking about making another Interweave quilt, but decided to make a version of this quilt at Boersma’s sewing center in McMinnville, OR, and I bought the pattern a few months ago.

As soon as I saw this in the store the ideas started flowing! More as I get a better idea of how I’m going to do this. I’m getting excited about starting a new project.

On the way back home from McMinnville yesterday we ran across the most gorgeous huge field of crimson Clover.

I try to make a point every spring of getting out into a field of crimson clover. You should have heard the bees!

I’m so glad we saw this field and that it was easy to get to.

And finally, the roses are blooming! All of a sudden, they’re everywhere!

It feels good to be home.

Five Quilts Bound and Two Half Yards

Had a good sleep in this morning. It felt so good after so many early mornings this last week. After a good breakfast and a strong cup of coffee and a few snuggles with Bender and Rico, I headed off to a local Quilt store to pick up the quilts I had one of the workers there bind for me.

While I was there I picked up a couple half yards of Australian Aboriginal prints to line the two Frankenbags I’ll make from the trimmings from my living room quilt.

Those will be some bold linings! I’m a firm believer that the lining of a bag is no place to scrimp! If. you look a the very bottom right of that bag body, you’ll see both of those fabrics.

I played pickleball after the fabric store and I had a blast! I played really well… I was aggressive and agile and played really hard. Several people commented on how well I was playing. I won nearly every game this afternoon. I was a sweaty mess when I was done.

When I got home I pulled out the quilts I had picked up to take a gander. And I have to say, I’m really happy with the job she did. They are finished beautifully!

It was especially wonderful to see this quilt done because it gave me such fits when I was sewing the top together.

I like that little big of orange and pink binding on that field of back and white.

I’m happy to see the whole picture on this one and am so glad it’s all done!

I really love that backing. It’s so cheerful.

Here are the other four quilts.

On this one the binding is the same as the baking fabric.

Same with this one. The purple binding is also on the back.

Mmmmm. I love all that orange.

This purple and red one was the one my friend and I made a couple summers ago when she was visiting. It’s about time this is done.

So much red.

And the last one is the one that I’ve had sitting around the longest. I really love this little quilt.

It poured all day again today. We’ve gotten close to two more inches of rain this weekend. Luckily, it cleared up after dinner tonight and I was able to get my boys and myself out for a nice walk. It was still really wet out there even though no rain was falling.

Busy week of work coming up. And when I’m able to I’ll be playing pickleball. It really helps me deal with the stress of work. It’s so good for me.
