A Little Scrappy Diversion

I saw a lampshade covered with Kaffe Fassett Collective fabric scraps on the KFC Facebook page earlier this week, and I fell in love with it. It was made by Marge Moeller.

She said she made this using scraps that were affixed directly to the lampshade using fabric decoupage. So I got on Amazon immediately and ordered some of the decoupage. I also ordered some pinking rotary cutter blades. They arrived today.

I’ve admired lampshades covered with yardage and have seen some really cool ones with KFC fabrics. But I thought it would be a chore to get a piece of fabric applied nicely to lampshade with slanted sides, like the one I want to cover. So when I saw this scrappy decoupage method I wanted to do it immediately.

My decoupage won’t arrive until Saturday, I think. So I hit my sewing room tonight and dug into my bins of smaller KFC scraps and started pressing and cutting.

I ended up with enough pieces cut to probably cover four lampshades.

The little pinked scraps are so pretty. The little pinked scraps are in the trash can.

I’m anxious to see how this turns out and am not happy that I have to wait. I don’t like to wait when I get a wild hair up my you-know-what. So I tossed some of these little pieces up on the lampshade on my bedside chest.

This is going to mimic that scrappy trip quilt hanging above my bed nicely. I think it will look great with my bed quilt too…once it gets cool enough to put that quilt back on my bed.

Once the decoupage is delivered, I’m guessing this will go together really quickly. I’ll need to cut some fabric strips to finish the top and bottom edge of the lampshade. I might dig in and get this done this weekend.

If I like the way this turns out I’ll cover the lampshade on my floor lamp in the living room with Australian Aboriginal fabric scraps. That would be a really fun addition to my living room.

I got a call from my long arm quilter today that my quarter log cabin quilt is done and ready to be picked up. I had been anticipating her call.

I’m really looking forward to seeing this monster done! It will be gifted to my brother and his wife. I’ll probably pick it up on Saturday.

I stepped outside with the dogs at the end of the work day today to toss the toy for them before darkness settled in. It was absolutely gorgeous out!

The sky was just wonderful and the colors were so vibrant. But it feels like winter. It didn’t get out of the 40s today. We’re supposed to get down close to freezing next week. It’s a little early to have these cool temps.

The rains yesterday broke early enough for me to get some pickleball in at the end of the day. Darkness and rain arrived at the same time…. just as my team scored our 11th point and a victory. We were wet by the time we got to our cars. I’m glad I got so get out and play.

Tomorrow is Friday. Another weekend is just around the corner.

  1. There are lots of ways to use the fabric confetti into fabric instead of putting it in the trash I’ve seen bags etc made with it 😀 Suebear from Queensland Australia

      1. That’s fun, but I have NO desire to make something from those scraps! I just like to look at the pretty pile and then get them out of my sewing room!

    1. I hope it’s not too messy. It should be pretty easy to make it look good. I’ll have to figure out how to finish the top and bottom so it looks professional. I don’t like. a messy finish!

    1. I have so many scraps! I was sort of stunned as I dug through my scrap bins yesterday! I love finding ways to use them up. but this won’t use up very many of them!

  5. I love the lampshade idea, I have a large waste bin in my sewing room that I have covered with odds and ends of non-kaffe fabric, it’s one of the favorite items I have ever covered using scraps and Modge Podge. I plan on covering my kitchen trash with various scraps of chicken print fabric that I hae left over from a past project. Can’t wait to see your finished lampshade. Take care and thanks for sharing.

    1. I’ve been thinking about doing this treatment on the chair in my sewing room. I’ve also toyed with the idea of doing some fun painting on it. The fabric decoupage would be easier and faster!

  6. Saw that shade on Facebook and just knew you’d pick up on it. Can’t wait to see what you’re going to use for the edge binding as I think her choice of edge was perfect. Gilded a lily so to speak.

  7. Ann: I’m hoping you can help. A few months back you posted a big block quilt (which I made and loved) it was 4 squares then cut 2-3 times and rearranged. There ended up being a small 4 square in the center with the other pieces arranged. Do you know what I’m talking about? I have the big squares made but can’t remember how to make the cuts. Thanks in advance

  8. I have a vintage fruit bowl that’s gorgeous and I fill it with those tiny slivers of fabrics, it’s perfect for my sewing room. Your lamp is going to be very pretty when finished. I’m looking forward to seeing your brother’s quilt, he is a very patient man. My own brothers were not.

  9. How timely your lampshade project is for me! I have a small floor lamp beside my recliner that needs some decoration – and this is it! I’m going to cut some Kaffe scraps today to do this! Thanks for the gentle “push” to decorate this small lampshade. It was needed!

  10. I love that your lifestyle includes regular strenuous activity!! And that you love the activity. I see so many quilters who are morbidly obese. . . . and it is so sad to see. You are a great example of a quilter who also likes to move, and you are not stationary throughout the day, tied to your machine! And love your up-cycling of the KF scraps. . . . your abode will be so colorul!

    Thanks for the lovely post!

  11. The lampshade idea will add an extra cozy feeling to the room. But nothing can compare to your autumn trees in colour. As we say in Australia: avagudweegend

  12. What a fun post! I enjoyed it all until you said “the little scraps are in the trash can!” Nooooooo! I will take those little scraps off your hands. I even take thread! I prefer the thread and the scraps separated, but it’s o.k. if they aren’t. I make fabric beads/small collages and to get Kaffe scraps, what a colorful mess! I’ll totally pay postage.
