Table Topper is Gifted… and LOVED!

I let myself sleep in a little this morning then after a shower and breakfast of lemon cake and ice cream I started in on finishing the binding for my table topper.

Getting the binding sewn onto the topper was a bit of a wrestling match. But that’s why I’m usually really happy to pay someone to do my bindings!

Even with that I had it sewn on and joined in no time and it was ready for hand finishing.

I turned on White Christmas, one of my favorite holiday movies, and started hand stitching.

My right hand it really hurting tonight. Another reason I don’t love all that hand finishing.

But in less than an hour I had it all done and tossed in onto my table to see how it looks.

Here’s another view that shows with quilting well.

And one last view…

I had a couple hours to spare between finishing this and when I needed to head out for dinner.

I’m so happy that my friend absolutely LOVES the table runner! I was worried that it was a lot of color and pattern for her. But she was so happy with it!

With a couple free hours before dinner I curled up on the sofa with a cup of coffee and watched some more holiday programming. While I watched TV my boys played with the holiday gift I gave them.

Bender got a little tangled up in it while I was wrapping gifts.

I did get a couple of quilting related gifts today. One gift certificate to my favorite local quilt store, and a friend gave me this ruler… which I need for a pattern I bought recently!

That might help narrow down what quilt I make next!

Back to work for a short yet hectic week. There’s a lot money I still have to raise before December 31!

  1. Hi there! I enjoy your blog very much! This table topper is lovely! What size is it and did you use a pattern? I’m thinking not, as I now recall your discussion of Math, for cutting it into an octagon(?). I will try to get back to that email to review how you did that. In the meantime, I’d appreciate knowing the size , and the size of the individual square blocks. Thanks so much. Merry Christmas, and all the best for 2024! Sally

    1. Rather than looking through email, you should go to my blog at http://www.agilejack1.com and scroll through the posts. There are several recent posts about making this table topper.

I didn’t use a pattern. I just chose blocks I wanted to use and went from there. My friend’s table is an octagon so I knew I wanted to make an octagon shape. One of my blog posts links to a video on how to calculate, measure and cut to make the octagon from a square.

I made the blocks using a 16 patch tutorial. I’ve linked to it in one of my blog posts on making this topper. the blocks finish at 8 inches.

I put a good size border on this and it’s around 38 inches wide. You can make one any size you want.

      good luck!

  2. That is wonderful…I feel your satisfaction …and sympathise with the pain of hand sewing. I have stiff fingers…old age …and find holding a sewing needle difficult…I do it but not as neatly as I would like to do…a job well done…happy new year and looking forward to more projects.

    1. I wish I was able, physically and mentally, to do more hand work. I love nice hand work but just don’t have the patience to do it myself. The pain in my hands is another issue!

  3. The table topper is beautiful, Anne!! It got the reception it deserved. I will have to look up that tuggy toy for my girls, although I fear they cannot be trusted with anything stuffed and that monkey may have a short life….btw pound cake and ice cream for Boxing Day breakfast? Bravo!

    1. My dogs don’t tend to destroy toys quickly. they will play for it a long time and It will wear out.

Ernie is a little toy destroyer! He make short work of a toy that Bender has been playing with for months… in minutes it was torn apart and completely destuffed!

    1. I had borrowed my friend’s ruler for a couple years and never used it. then I got interested in some patterns recently that used it. So it was perfect that she gifted me one for my own! Lots of variations on blocks you can make with it.

    1. It’s my own pattern. It’s just 16 patch blocks sewn into a square of 16 blocks. then I cut it in to an octagon. Lots of tutorials on YouTube for cutting a square into an octagon. then added a 3.5 inch border. That’s it!]

I just started a quilt tonight with my new ruler.

  7. Your table topper is gorgeous. After viewing all your fantastic quilts this year I’m so tempted to change colors in my house. I probably won’t because my husband has Alzheimer’s and I want him to recognize everything as he declines. But I sure love what you make.

    1. My mom had Alzheimers. It’s amazing how changing an environment can really throw them.

I’ve decided to introduce a more colorful quilt to my living room and I’m going to finish my sort of woven Aboriginal quilt to use on my sofa. It will be really good in my room .

  8. Lol breakfast of a champion. I love eating food thst isn’t the typical breakfast.

Hands, yes I know about that. I give mine a quick soak in ice cold water. Numbs the pain then after a few minutes in warm not hot water. Back to sewing.

Love your work with Kaffe Faset. Colors are so vibrant and make one happy and full of energy, and everything other project you do. Going to look at your quilting how to this week.

Best of all the happy things this coming year. Thanks for everything.

    1. I’ve been using heat on my hand but haven’t iced it yet. I’ll have to add that as the heat doesn’t seem to be doing much.

Quilting really Is all about the color for me.

  9. The table topper is fabulous! I’d make one if I ever had a flat uncluttered table to put it on! Of course, I could always hang it on the wall. Hmmmmmm.

    1. There are a good number of quilt patterns that use that ruler. I’ve had a pattern for years that uses it that I never got around to making. Might have to do that soon.

  10. Your table topper is gorgeous. You gave me an idea to make one for my in-laws who have a round table too. They live in Florida so I’m sure Kaffe fabric will be in there for sure. Thank you for the idea!
