I had thought I might put a little time into sewing my blue blocks together tonight but I was just too tired to dig into something that required a little focus. But I still felt like I wanted a little unwind time in my sewing room.
So I set the timer on my phone for 30 minutes and picked up the crumb pieces I sewed together a couple weeks ago and sewed them into larger crumb blocks. I think I’ll probably use these crumb blocks in a Frankenbag using blocks left over from my Fresh Start quilt.
I stopped with this size and shape because I don’t know yet what I’ll need for a future bag panel.
That combo should make a fun bag. And a Frankenbag is a great way to use up left over blocks.
You can find my tutorial for crumb piecing here.
For those of you who don’t know, a couple of years ago I made a tutorial for my Frankenbag. And if you go to my blog at http://www.agilejack1.com and search for Frankenbag you’ll get a ton of posts showing bags I’ve made and bags that others have made from my tutorial.
Then this…
I’ve had an idea rolling around in my head for a couple years. It involves a limited color story. It involves black and white. It will involve string piecing.
Surprise! It’s my favorite color!
I’ll have to pare down that pile of green fabrics to about ten. And I’ll have to pull out another bin of my low volume white/black fabrics and select the ones that are just right. And I’m not sure that little piece of jumble will do what I want it to do.
I went a little nuts a couple years ago and bought a ton of the low volume fabrics with gusto to include them into some quilts. I’ve had several ideas for using these fabrics but have never actually done it. It will be fun to see some of them come together in a project.
This is looking like I will charge forward with it soon. More as this idea develops.
I was looking for a quilt photo the other night and ran across this photo from 2018. This was my ENTIRE collection of Kaffe Fassett Collective fabric in 2018. One drawer!
It clearly seemed like a LOT of fabric at that time of my life. My KFC collection has grown to fill that entire chest of drawers, plus there a couple drawers in a file cabinet in my sewing room that hold my larger pieces for backings. And I don’t want to think about all the piles of fabric in various places in my sewing room. I’m sure I had no idea back in 2018 how insane this would become!
I have to work tomorrow. I’ll be on the radio doing a little fundraising from 2-5 pm. So I get a good portion of the day to have a little recreation. I’m playing pickleball at 8:30 am and will head down to Molalla, Oregon, for a sheep herding lesson at my trainers property after that. Rico hasn’t had a lesson for a few weeks. He is going to be so excited!
I’m going to have a pickleball lesson with my teacher on Sunday morning. It’s been nearly two months since we’ve played together! I’m really looking forward to getting out there and working hard at pickleball.
I’m getting so close to my vacation I can almost taste it!
lovely post, as ever. I adore green too and await seeing those ideas come to fruition.
I just showed my husband your kfc drawer from 2018 – PS my very modest stash into perspective he said!
I’m off to my homeland to see the six nations rugby today, meeting up with a dear friend . Can’t wait. Come on Wales!
Have a wonderful weekend.

It will be interesting to see this green quilt come together. I hope it works! I’ve wanted to use these black and white fabrics for a long time.
I hope you had a nice trip!

Sister! Green is my favorite, too! I showed a selvage quilt with a bright green background at guild the other night and one of my friends remarked she would have known it as mine from the green!

i don’t know what you’re making with those greens and low volume B&W but I’m all in. Those Are all my favorites. you think your out of control with Kaffe? 3 quilt stores by me have gone out of business in the past 2 years. I was helping them out in a big way by filling my studio. Heck some of it i was getting at $5 a yard. I’ve since retired and we’re in the middle of downsizing…. NOT my Kaffe! and moving. I’m now not working but it’s all packed for the move. so I’m just drooling and dreaming… thanks.

$5 a yard is a great time to buy quilt backing! I never pay full price unless bad timing demands it!
I’m not buying anywhere near as much fabric as I bought during the first couple years of the pandemic. I went a little nuts! So I’m having fun making quilts from my stash!

Always enjoy your posts….and I’m wondering when you purchase “whim” fabric, what’s the yardage amount that is your “standard”? 😃

If I’m just buying something for my stash, I buy half yards. Unless it’s something I love or something I know I’ll use a lot of. Then I’ll buy a yard, or two, or three.

I had a little laugh/groan when you said you bought a bunch of low volume prints a few years ago. I remember when they were really introduced in blogs (everywhere) and I bought some too. I haven’t used any. But I plan on getting them out this year and doing some piecing with them. Thanks for the information about Bender’s ears, I thought he was a border collie, but his ears are different, such a pretty boy.

I had all kinds of plans for those low volume prints. And a few years later I’ve done nothing with them. Time to dig them out and see if all those purchases were a mistake!

Well Anne, I was not a green fan in my pre-quilting days, but as my colour handling skills have grown, so has my regard for *all* the colours in the rainbow! Can’t wait to see what you have planned. I too added low volume to my very extensive stash and use them in baby quilts. I would love to hear Kaffe Fassett ruminate on low volume prints!! It seems the older I get the more vibrant I want my quilts to be…

I like the low volume prints as an alternative to a solid background. I don’t have much enthusiasm for a white or off-white fabric. We’ll see how it turns out! I might have to find another use for the bins of low volume fabrics I have!!! Maybe another Ice Storm quilt!
I tend to make so many scrappy quilts that the color story is basically ALL the colors. It will be fun to work with a more limited palette. Plus, green is my favorite color.

I have a similar Kaffe fabric story. I was lucky enough to take a class here at Colchester Mill Fabrics and Quilting here in CT with Kaffe and Brandon. So I brought my one bin of Kaffe fabric with me to use it up. Fast forward 4 years and I now have more than 8 bins of Kaffe fabric. That after making 4 quilts. What can I say, Kaffe fabric makes me happy!
You are such an inspiration! Thank you!!
