A Gorgeous Friday Evening and Four Blocks

The evening sort of slipped away from me. I had thought I’d get a lot more of my green quarter log cabin bocks done but I only managed to finish up four of them before I felt tired.

So that means that I have 16 blocks completed. I really have no idea how many I’ll need of finish this quilt, but I’m guessing I’m somewhere around half way done, maybe a little less.

I’ve been thinking about how I’m going to finish the edges of this quilt. I really don’t want to have a wide void of the low volume fabrics on the edge so I’ve decided that I’m not going to make setting triangles for this. Rather. I’m going to add small squares in the corners where setting triangles would go.

And then I’ll trim off the edge of the quilt along the diagonal of that small corner block. this tape measure is representing where the edge of this will be trimmed.

Then I’ll add a green border all the way around… maybe four inches or so. I’m pretty sure it’s going to be this lovely little number. And I’m pretty sure I saw a bolt of that fabric at my local quilt store.

That photo is much darker than this all is in reality. I like this fabric for the border because it’s got all the colors… dark, medium, and light green, with a little teal and lovely pops of orange and pink.

Here’s a bigger view of what that will look like.

That photo seems to be a little more true to color but is still a little dark.

Hmmm… maybe I’ll add a thin border of the black and white strip between the whites and the outer border. I’ll have to play around and see how that looks but it might be a really fun idea and will tie the blocks to the border. Just a touch… maybe a half inch of the stripe showing.

It was an absolutely gorgeous day here today. I had my annual furnace/ac maintenance check today and the dogs were relegated to the back yard for two hours while the technician was here. They were so happy out there that they stayed out there most of the day. So much glorious sunshine and lovely temps in the mid 60s. I’m pretty sure my grass grew an inch today!

My daffodils are finally opening up and the first blooms on my flowering pair trees (I have planted 11 in my back yard!) have just opened up.

My boys and I took a nice walk in short sleeves late this afternoon. There were so many people out walking and so many dogs. They also got several sessions of frisbee in the yard today. The more action they get, the more they want!

After dinner Rico was anticipating that action was imminent!

Rico RARELY gets up on the furniture. He was so intent on convincing me to go out and play that he had to get close to be the most effective in his plea!

I’m going to do all I can to enjoy the gorgeous weather this weekend. I’m heading out early tomorrow morning to play pickleball, then Rico’s sheep herding lesson. Sunday morning a colleague from work is bringing her puppy by for a play date with my boys. Then I’ll head off to deliver my quilts to the binding aficionado and will stop on the way back for a couple of hours of pickleball.

I’ll wrap up Sunday with a dinner of corned beef and cabbage to celebrate St. Paddy’s day with the friends who took me in during my power outage in January. My boys will get to come along and play with their corgi. I’ll be sure to get some photos of their shenanigans.

  2. I’m wondering if using the stripy fabric to bind the quilt might give it a pop if you end up not liking it between the light and the green border.

    I’m just loving the greens and the light fabrics.

  3. Your idea of a very narrow piece of the black and white striped fabric between the quilt and the border sounds like a great idea. The proposed border fabric is awesome and will really enhance the quilt. And … sounds like you don’t have enough for a border in your stash and there’s a bolt of it at your local quilt shop… What better reason to go shopping!!! Happy weekend. 🙂

  6. the quilt is coming along fantastic. the strip border sounds like just the thing.

    i noticed your shades in your living room. i think bottom up shades make the most sense of all. you can cover half the window and have privacy but still have light and a view outside. where do yu get all your energy? i get tired reading about all your activities, lol.

    1. I originally got those shades because I had a little dog who was reactive. With this blind I could let the light in but not allow the little dog to look out and bark at everting that went by! I love that shade! I can also open it up from the bottom but rarely do.

    1. Of all the quilts I’ve made I only use three in my house. Two in my bedroom (one on the bed, one on the wall) and one on my sofa. I do give some away. I only have one in my closet now, well… plus the five I’m taking to the binding person tomorrow.

      Most of them are just tops. they get folded up and stored in my closet until I decide I need to have one quilted.

  8. your quilt looks like a piece art for a wall! very nice. i like your idea of the strip between the border with the black and white. what about that as a flange between the border and quilt? how can you resist that look of such a patient dog? lol

  9. This may be my favorite of your quilts so far! Love the geranium border too. I already get your posts and enjoy your color creativity. I wish you could put together some of my fabric for me!

    1. It’s not my favorite I’ve made, but I do love it!

      I just grab a pile of fabric that I like and then remove what doesn’t seem to work. You might be surprised!

      I’ve had that piece of fabric in my stash since it first came out and I wasn’t crazy about it but after working with it I just love it. I’m definitely going to buy more for my stash.

      I tried the narrow stripe border tonight and I love it! will have to decide how wide I want it.

    Thank you so much for sharing your quilt life with all of us! I really like seeing your quilts and love the little videos to make the construction clearer to your fans.
    I LOVE low volume backgrounds and your green quilt is lovely. Your idea for a skinny inner border is an idea I use often. The skinny border needs to be a great contrast or a focal fabric and the stripe idea is perfect. It might need to be a bit more than 1/2 inch-IMO. I often use 1” skinny borders as a great frame.
    Whatever your choice is-it will be BEAUTIFUL and I’m so glad you are willing to share your quilts with us! Sometimes we just need a great idea to move forward!

  15. I really like your idea for the edges of the quilt. It’s actually a very stylish quilt. Didn’t think I was going to like it but it’s grown on me. I love it. Also loved the boys playing with corgi. The corgi got lots more exercise than the boys who were a little dismissive. And of court I won’t mention the baptism…..

  16. Anne, it always surprises me when I zero in on a small motif in a quilt block. That very delicate black and white strip in your green blocks did just that when I saw them all together. They are not huge, but small and yet they demand to be seen. I obeyed. Love that quilt!
