A Spark of Oomph?

It’s been a week. work has been a little nuts. Since my last post I haven’t spent much time in my sewing room and I’m ok with that.

I got a message yesterday from my friend who visited last summer. She’s the one who recently retired and has been looking for a property in my area for their retirement. They’ve been looking for around eight months and there haven’t been very many houses on the market. Well, there was a new listing and her agent wanted her to fly up to see it.

She arrived this morning. I was supposed to play pickleball but the rain put an end to that. So Instead I hightailed it out to the property she was coming to see and met her and her agent there to walk the property and see the house.

To make a long story short, she now has an offer accepted on that house! She’s so excited about it. it’s a really lovely house and property in a great area.

She is a friend of mine that I’ve known for years through dogs. The she got into quilting, and she started playing pickleball at about the same time I did. All of this at an 800 mile difference.

It’s going to be so fun to have a pickleball, quilting, doggie friend in the area! We’re going to play pickleball tomorrow, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday! She leaves Thursday.

I did feel a spark of oomph and hit my sewing room last night for just a few minutes to pull some black and white fabrics. I’ve been thinking I might strike out on a black and white with a little color version o the interweave quilt. There is a black and white version on the pattern cover.

Here’s the ten fabrics I pulled from my black and white stash.

I’m pretty happy with this initial pull but it’s entirely possible I may make some changes. The accent strips that will interweave with these fabrics will likely be Kaffe Fassett Collective fabrics in a limited color way. But I still haven’t decided what color… red? Orange? Pink? turquoise? Purple? It will be interesting to see where this lands. I’ll also need to decided on a background fabric. I’m thinking a low volume black and white with very little pattern. I’ll have to see what’s in my stash.

I did sort out my Brandon Leftover blocks by color, approximately. it’s hard to decide what color some of these are!

Now I need to sort of shuffle them up and get them up on the design wall.

While my friend and her realtor talked this morning I hit a small quilt shop in the area. I bought a few pieces of fabric. Not very much. My friend joined me there when they were done. Then we visited a nearby pickleball court area and headed off to another local quilt store on the way back to my area. I bought one piece of black and white batik and this KFC glasses case.

The store has had these for awhile and I saw on Instagram that they had received another shipment. So I decided to dive I and finally get one!

We did grab an early dinner before we headed back to my place. My friend got the good news about her offer being accepted in early evening. It was so exciting!

It’s been a pretty rainy week. But there were moments of brilliance.

It looks like we have some dry, yet cloudy weather coming up.

  1. well lucky you. how great to have so many things in common. Another black and white quilt sounds great. you’ll never hear me complain about that combo. What is that tree please? it’s spectacular. looks more fall than spring.

    1. I went on a jag a few years ago and bought a lot of black and white fabrics and that green quilt is the first time I really used them. I still have a lot left! will have to come up with some other ideas.

  2. Your idea for the black and white interweave quilt sounds like another winner. I’ll look forward to seeing it sometime in the future. I’m so happy for you that your friend found a house and her offer was accepted. Wow – a sewing, pickleball, and doggie friend all rolled into one and living in your area!!! How close is she to where you live?

  3. Good morning! I’ve followed you for quite awhile now and you have been a great inspiration to me with your Kaffe Fasset works. I am going to be in Beaverton for a week in June and I was wondering if you would please recommend some quilt stores that you prefer. I’ll be coming from Boise area and I will have a car. By the way, I don’t know if you ever come to Idaho, but The Gathering Place in Rupert, Idaho is one of the greatest quilt stores I have ever been in. It’s 3 hours drive from me, but I go about twice a year. Fabulous Kaffe selection and so much more. Might be worth a road trip for you some day? Thanks in advance if you have any suggestions for me….. Lavona Husted (916)719-7950

    1. Best quilting store in POrtland proper for KFC fabrics is Pioneer Quilts in Milwaukie, OR, a suburb of Portland. They also have a really good selection of Australian Aboriginal fabrics and batiks, as well as wool for aplique and a lot of other fabrics. also, Country Manor in Battleground, WA, just over the Columbia River from Portland, carries a large selection of KFC fabrics but you won’t find all the newest fabrics there. They have A LOT of fabric. Sisters Quilt Shop in Chehalis, WA, is about 90 minutes north of my house in SW Portland but worth the drive if you have the time. Large selection of KFC fabrics and a lot of other stuff. If you are heading to the coast, be sure to check out Center Diamond in Cannon Beach. They are growing their selection of KFC fabrics and they have a gorgeous selection of batiks. Plus a lot of other fabric.

I’ve been to the Gathering Place a couple times! I used to make that drive from Portland to Salt Lake every year and my friend who would travel with me and I would take that little detour. It’s a nice little store.

  4. Anne, I have a question about your Brandon leftover swirly not-blue project. Been following along and wondering -since you made the shark’s tooth strip a bit wider, did you adjust the size of the comb strip squares when you cut them? I love this one so much, I want to make a baby size for my first grand. Thank you for sharing your wonderful creations!

    1. Didn’t adjust the square but you certainly could.I have plenty of space to square up the blocks. If you’re concerned about wasting that fabric I suggest you adjust the measurement of the square and make a block from scrap fabrics to see how it works and how it is to square it up.

      Thanks for reading!
