Cutting and Planning Another Quilt

Today was quite a day at work. Anytime I come back from vacation I can count on a good number of people needing my attention that first day. So today was chock full of meetings. I was in meetings from 9 am to 5:00 with a half hour break about mid way! I was exhausted by the time my day ended. I stepped away from my desk at about 5:30 and headed out for a 2.5 mile walk with my boys. We all needed it and it felt good to move my body and get some fresh air.

I wanted to get the fabrics for my new Brandon Mably Interweave quilt all cut tonight so I started pressing all those jumble fabrics…

…and then got to cutting. It’s a lot of strips and a lot of sub-cutting the strips. Oh, and counting. A lot of counting. But I got them done… all the accent strips and background pieces.

So now all I have to do it make sure I know what I’m doing and then start sewing.

I was glad that I didn’t have plans so accomplish a ton of stuff tonight as I have a bit of a headache after my hectic day. I’ve already taken some Tylenol PM and hope to be in bed at a reasonable hour tonight.

But before I left my sewing room I took a photo of the fabrics I put together Sunday before Linda left. This quilt will be a replicate of my recent blue quilt.

The polka dot fabric will be the strips along the side of each center piece.

I dummied up a few blocks to see how this will look.

If you’re looking at these photos on your phone or in email it will likely be a bit messy and they will be out of order. So here’s a screen capture that shows what I’m seeing as I type this post.

It’s definitely a different feel from the blue version. This is so saturated. So much color. It lacks the airiness of the blue quilt. Where the blue quilt feels summery and light, this version will feel dark and moody. It will be fun to see it come together.

That’s it for tonight. My boys have settled in for the night and it’s time to rest my poor head and unwind in preparation of a good night’s sleep.

  4. just out of curiosity… do you have any idea how many quilts and/or Frankenbags you’ve made? How many years ago did you start? I so enjoy your color pallets.

    1. I think I’ve made around 75 Frankenbags. Maybe a few more. I lost count. Finished quilts is probably around 20. but quilt tops is probably more like 40 0r so. Maybe more. I’ve never counted! I tend to make a lot that never get quilted! I can’t justify the expense if I don’t have a plan for them.

      the number quilts I make increased exponentially when the pandemic hit. It was a way to stave off boredom and isolation.

      I started quilting around 2015. I did a lot of other sewing before I made my first quilt. I used to make all my own blue jeans when I was in high school. made dresses when I was out of college and started working. haven’t made clothes for years.

      1. That’s hard core making jeans. I did it once! I’ve made lined suits, dresses, coats, etc. Jeans… those are tough. Especially for fit.

  13. Those reds and oranges are ON FIRE! It’s definitely going to be a different look from the blue one. 

    I’m looking forward to seeing your interweave quilt come together. I made mine a couple rows longer but if I make another I’d probably do the size on the pattern.

    1. I’m planning on making the throw size according to the pattern. I’m just debating the border they have on it.

      I’m glad you like the reds. I’m sad the sharks teeth is in such limited color ways.

  15. I like the way you’ve set your fabrics out, to see how they will play together. I like the color palette even though it’s not my usual…it’s good to break free of our norms!

    1. I always start with a pile of fabric, laid out on what will be a background or main fabric. it makes it easy for me to remove fabrics that don’t work and identify what’s needed.

      it’s really good to push ourselves out of our comfort zone. That’s when some really wonderful things happen!!!

    1. the orange colors are more in my typical wheel house. blues are not my favorites, but I do like this blue quilt.

      Orange gets a bad rap. it’s a wonderful color and so many people hate it!
